GRYPHONS HOST LONGEST RUNNING DOMESTIC WRESTLING TOURNAMENT IN CANADA
The USA national women’s team made the trip all the way from Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In the men’s team competition Brock University took the top prize with 39 points while the Gryphons were second at 35 points and Montreal was third at 30 points. On the women’s side the USA team were the top team with 45 points while Calgary was second with 25 points and the Gryphons were a close third at 22 points.
With the tough competition the Gryphon varsity team found hardship only winning a handful of matches however, the Gryphon Alumni who compete with the Guelph Wrestling Club within the University shone through.
Two time CIS men’s champion Jamie Cox of Guelph led the way for the Gryphons by winning the 120 kg weight class in front of the home team.
Guelph saw two of their toughest competitors make it to the finals in the 74 kg weight class, however Gryphon Alumnist and Hall of Famer Zoltan Hunyady had to with draw from the finals due to inury.
Tara Hedican, a Gryphon alumnist also competed on the women’s side. Tara was a multiple CIS champion for the Gryphon’s. Tara lost a tough semi-final to USA national team member, Randi Miller, in the 63 kg, which left her fighting for the bronze. Tara was able to capture the bronze medal with a well fought match against Helen Hennick from Calgary.
The Gryphon’s will travel to Kingston this weekend to compete in the Queens Open and then finish off the regular season tournaments in Western on February 3.
