GAELS ROW TO GOLD AT HEAD OF TRENT REGATTA
Morgan Jarvis of Clearwater Bay, Ont., easily won the lightweight men's single event with a time of 17 minutes and 57.86 seconds, which was a whole minute ahead of next rower. Sarah Marshall of Kingston, Ont., won the lightweight women's single with a time of 20:37.96, besting rowers from Brock and McMaster.
The lightweight men's coxed four, consisting of Amy de Merlis of Toronto, Taylor Overing of Rothesay, N.B, Chris Purdon of Vancouver, Rob Ballard of Vancouver and Ryan Meyers of Kingston, Ont., brought home a gold medal in their event as well, placing ahead of McGill and Western.
In the lightweight men's double, Jaime Christian of London, Ont., and Alex Condello of McLean, Va., also placed first, ahead of Brock and U of Montreal.
Other notable results included the heavyweight women's eight and coxed four who came a close second to Western in both events.
"[Western] beat us by 46 seconds last year so we made some really good gains," said Jackie Day of Kingston, Ont. who is a member of the women's heavyweight eight crew. "We are really excited to go head to head against them next weekend, that's when we work to our fullest potential."
The lightweight women came second to McGill by just four seconds.
"We came together really well and were moving on the boats ahead of us in the first part of the race but got stuck behind a slower crew in a no-passing zone. It was very frustrating and cost us some time but we handled it very well considering the circumstances," said Elizabeth Carter of Severn River, Ont., about McGill narrowly defeating them.
Greg McNally of Carlisle, Ont., came second in the heavyweight men's single and Katya Herman of Sudbury, Ont., also came second in the championship women's single.
