QUEEN'S PULLS OUT WIN OVER WESTERN WHILE MCMASTER STARTS 2008 WHERE THEY LEFT OFF IN 2007
The Golden Gaels pulled out a 3-2 win over the Western Mustangs in a thrilling comeback Friday night at the Physical Education Centre this past Friday night.
The night started with the Gaels defeating the Mustangs 25-21 in the first
set. However, Western came back with a 25-23 win in a hard fought second
set.
The third set was just as close and had a similar result to the second set,
a 25-22 Western win. With the Mustangs having a 2-1 lead the Gaels dug in
and pulled out a 25-23 win in the fourth set, setting up a fifth and final
frame.
The final set was close right down to the end with each team keeping vying
for the win. In the end the Gaels edged the Mustangs in a 19-17 final set
win.
The Gaels were led by Jeff DeMeza of Calgary who had 17 kills while Devon
Miller (Barrie, ON), had a game high 54 assists. The Western Mustangs
were led by Eric Simon (London, ON) with 17 kills, and Andrew Hinchey (Oshawa, ON), with 50 assists.
McMaster 3, Ryerson 1
Parish Offer (Kingston, ON) and the McMaster Marauders men's volleyball team refused to start-off the New Year on the wrong foot after going undefeated in the first half of the season. They beat the Ryerson Rams 3-1 on Saturday making it apparent that the No.4 nationally ranked team intended to pick up where they left off in 2007.
Offer led his team to their 13th straight conference victory with a game high 16 kills, 3 digs, and an ace, ensuring the Marauders continued their winning ways.
McMaster lost the first set 29-27 before taking three in a row 25-19, 25-23, and 25-16. They currently sit in first place in the OUA with 26 points while Ryerson falls to a 5-6 record.
Jeremy Groenveld (Welland, ON) followed suit on the attack edging Offer's 28 total attacks with 29 of his own. He converted 9 kills to go along with 12 points and 3 digs.
Ryan Hudson (Winnipeg, MB) set the table with 27 assists while Josh Nederveen (Dundas, ON) helped out with a team-high 8 digs on the night.
The Rams Szymon Wierdak, who came up with 9 digs of his own, would be the only one to out do him. His teammate Paul Khomenko was the primary offensive threat for Ryerson landing 11 kills. Cameron Bartlett paced both teams with 39 assists in the loss.
