Blues battle back to beat the Gryphons
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues rallied to down the Guelph Gryphons 3 sets to 2 this weekend in an intense match that was pushed to a fifth set (19-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 15-12). Brendan Peel was Toronto's top scorer with 19 kills and 2 blocks. Teammate Senan Farrell added 12 kills and 3 aces. For Guelph, Jordan Reynolds had 20 kills and 2 aces; Matt Peters had 17 kills and 3 blocks and Dave Horenberg had 13 kills and 3 blocks.
Ryerson 3, Laurier 1
Rams play a strong net game to beat the Golden Hawks
The Laurier Golden Hawks (1-6) traveled to Toronto to challenge the Ryerson Rams (6-3). Although the Hawks lost 0-3, Laurier still displayed good individual skills. Right side hitter J.P. Wikerd boosted the Hawks with his strong attacks, while middle Jesse Freeston made several key blocks. Greg Marszalek from the Rams served tough, scoring 6 consecutive points against the Hawks. However, Laurier's Brydon Mees served the Hawks right back into the game with some difficult float serves. Middle Peter Wigger was named player of the game for Laurier due to his consistent hitting and blocking.
York 3, Windsor 1
York Lions keep winning streak alive
The first place York Lions (8-0) continued their winning streak with a tough win over the hometown Windsor Lancers (25-18, 26-24, 25-22, 25-22). This win for the Lions keeps them in first place in the OUA standings. York rookie Paul Podstouka tallied 14 kills and 7 digs while James Battison recorded 10 kills with 3 digs. Lancers Stephen Seguin led his team with 12 kills and 3 digs and veteran setter Jon Harris added 32 assists with 7 digs.
McMaster 2, Ryerson 3
McMaster loses their first game of the regular season!
The previously undefeated McMaster Marauders (6-1) suffered their first loss of the season to the Ryerson Rams (6-3) on Sunday. Ryerson topped the Marauders 3-2 (25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 25-19, 10-15). McMaster's Steve Murray contributed 18 kills, 6 digs, and a solo block while Parrish Offer demonstrated his defensive expertise with 11 digs. Third year Ram Ryan Vandenburg, had a tremendous hitting game with 26 kills to lead his team to victory. Veteran setter Greg Marszalek tallied 67 assists and third year libero Lukas Porosa added 10 digs.
Guelph 3, RMC 1
Guelph tops Paladins
The Guelph Gryphons picked up an important win this weekend topping the RMC Paladins 3 sets to 1 (25-23, 23-25,25-23,25-16). Jordan Reynolds had another strong game for Guelph with 20 kills, 1 ace and 7 blocks. Matt Peters added 11 kills, 1 ace, and 1 block. For RMC, Reid Wunke had 17 kills and 4 blocks. Ivan Karin had 18 on 14 kills, 1 ace and 3 blocks.
