OUA Men's Soccer Roundup (Oct. 1)
September 27, 2017
Laurentian 2 Nipissing 1
Looking to avenge a defeat on home soil against their northern neighbour, Nipissing Lakers, the Voyageurs men's soccer team made the most of their chances and left North Bay with a victory and the Riley Gallo Cup.
The game opened up with some back and forth action before the Voyageurs capitalized on couple of chances. Dean Pizolinas and Ayden Meilleur tallied just four minutes apart, in the 37th and 41st minutes, to stake the Voyageurs to a 2-0 lead. The Lakers would answer before the end of the half as Andy Bago converted a penalty kick in the 43rd minute.
The Bago goal would be the only blemish on Connor Vande Weghe's record. With the Voyageurs only two shots on target ending up in goals, the team looked to Vande Weghe to carry them the rest of the way and, arguably the best goalkeeper in the OUA, was more than happy to oblige. Vande Weghe made 11 saves on the night, seven of them in the second half and a few of the outstanding variety, to help the Voyageurs clinch the Riley Gallo Cup for the 8th time in it's 10 year history.
Vande Weghe now leads the OUA and U SPORTS in saves with 74 on the season over the course of nine games, 23 more than the next closest keeper in the country and 32 more than the next closest in the OUA.
The third place Voyageurs will now play host to the OUA East leading Carleton Ravens on Sunday at 2:15pm.

Carleton 4 Nipissing 0
NORTH BAY, ON — Coming out firing, the Carleton Ravens men’s soccer team dominated the Nipissing Lakers en route to a 4-0 win at St. Joseph Scollard Hall in North Bay on Saturday afternoon.
Earlier this week, Carleton was named No. 8 on the U SPORTS Top 10 list for the first time this season – joining Toronto, Guelph and York as OUA teams among the top in Canada.
Coming off a shaky 2-1 win at home, the Ravens were looking to avoid the same mistakes they made previously against the Lakers that led to a slow start.
Carleton didn’t have a history of success on Nipissing’s home turf – drawing four of their last five roach matches in North Bay – and were be up for another fight in front of the Nipissing homecoming crowd, but came through early and often.
Carleton’s offence dominated the entire game and their constant possession led them to out-shoot Nipissing 10-0 on the afternoon.
“It was a vast improvement over when we played them last Sunday,” said head coach Kwesi Loney. “Our possession wasn’t as fractured as it was last week. It was more fluid and we got a lot of movement off the ball – a lot of positives off that.”
The Ravens men quickly opened the scoring to take a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Stefan Karajovanovic (Gatineau, QC) finished off a cross from fellow rookie Emad Houache (Ottawa, ON).
They added to their total in the 24th minute when Karajovanovic carried the ball down the line and passed it into the 18-yard box for Gabriel Bitar (Ottawa, ON) to complete the play, making it 2-0.
With the first half winding down, Carleton added a third goal to their total in the 42nd minute thanks to another pass from Karajovanovic into the box to Houache, who helped the team to a commanding 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
“[Houache] had a very productive game,” said Loney. “We had him on the left-hand side, we had him on the right-hand side and he was causing all kinds of problems for the opposition. He also showed his versatility being able to play both sides very well.”
Despite a relatively quiet beginning to the second half, the Ravens got back on the scoreboard in the 88th minute on a corner kick. Jeremy Aweya (Ottawa, ON) headed the ball to Cristopher Malekos (Saint-Hyppolyte, QC) who slotted it in by the back post to secure the 4-0 win.
The shutout pushes Carleton’s winning streak to three and moves them to 8-1-2 on the season ahead of Sunday’s rematch against the Laurentian Voyageurs. In last week’s matchup at MNP Park, the Ravens overcame a slow first half to secure a 6-0 shutout.
“We’re very conscious of it,” said Loney of the team’s first-half performance last week. “We’ve talked about enjoying this game in the moment right now, and then as soon as we get to Sudbury starting to think about the next day – so recovery, eating well, getting a good night’s rest and waking up tomorrow morning focused so we can execute.”
Kick-off is set for 2:15 p.m. Sunday at the LU Soccer Fields in Sudbury.

Windsor 0 Western 2
LONDON, Ont. – Braeden Gee provided all the offence the Mustangs would need, scoring twice in the second half to lift Western to a 2-0 win over the Windsor Lancers on Saturday afternoon at Mustang Field.

Waterloo 3 York 4
The No. 9 nationally-ranked York University Lions men's soccer team took on the Waterloo Warriors Saturday at Alumni Field. After an intense second half in which they nearly gave up the lead, the Lions hung on to beat the Warriors 4-3.
The Lions and Warriors faced off last weekend in Waterloo, Ont. The result of that game was a 4-0 win for the Lions.
Second-year midfielder Steve Kloutsouniotis scored the first goal for the Lions seven minutes into the playing time. Fellow midfielder Eddie Lay continued the scoring with a pair of goals in the 24th and 31stminutes. Rounding out scoring for the first half was Dylan Carreiro, who scored seconds before the referee whistled for halftime. The Lions led the Warriors 4-0 at halftime.
The Warriors took over the scoring in the second half, beginning with a goal by Florian Bruckeder in the 68th minute and continued by teammates Nicholas Ribeiro and Michael Manu. They desperately tried to tie up the score, but the Lions were able to put up a fight and maintain their lead.
Quillan Roberts, making his first start for the Lions, had some miscommunication with his defenders in the second half that contributed to the goals for the Warriors.
Despite the second-half struggles, the Lions have now won seven matches in a row and improved to 8-2-0 on the season, moving into first place in the OUA West Division for the first time this year. The Warriors dropped to 1-7-2 and remain outside the playoff picture in eighth place.
The Lions will face the Western Mustangs, one of two teams to defeat them this season, on Sunday 3:15pm at Alumni Field in their next game.

Ryerson 3 Queen’s 0
KINGSTON — The Ryerson Rams were too much for the hometown Queen's Gaels to handle, cruising to a 3-0 win at Richardson Stadium on Saturday.
Abdallah El-Chanti's goal in the 38th minute was enough to seal the victory, but Raheem Rose and Andrew Dias wanted to get in on the goal scoring as well, as the Ryerson Rams continue to push towards the playoffs with a convincing effort in Kingston. The win extends the Rams' unbeaten streak against the Gaels to five, dating back to September 6, 2015.
With the Rams in control of the game in the dying minutes of the first half, Andrew Dias (Toronto, Ont.) was taken down in the box by Gaels fullback Chris Meyer, which allowed Raheem Rose (Toronto, Ont.) to step up from the spot and slide Ryerson's second goal of the game to the right of the Tricolour's Alex Jones.
"Playing at Queen's is always a tall task. The strength of our team in today's game was in our depth," said Rams head coach Filip Prostran. "I think we have shown that playing different combinations of players down the stretch.
Early in the second half, Dias was looking for more. After receiving a beautiful back heel from Misel Klisara (Mississauga, Ont.), Rose delivered a perfect ball through to Dias and he made no mistake from seven yards out. Ryerson controlled the tempo the rest of the way, with Praveen Ahilan (Unionville, Ont.) maintaining the clean sheet.
"Considering the tight playoff contest we had with them last year, this game was always going to be high energy from the start." I thought we dealt with it well in the early stages and showed what we can do in the second half after we settled down," added Prostran. "We have a job to do tomorrow against RMC and that is where our focus is."
A win tomorrow against the RMC Paladins would see the Rams move to 4-6-1 on the season, with the playoffs just four weeks away.

Carleton 3 Laurentian 1
SUDBURY, ON — Despite a late push from the Laurentian Voyageurs, the Carleton Ravens men’s soccer team held on to secure a 3-1 win at the LU Soccer Fields in Sudbury on Sunday afternoon.
With only five games remaining in the regular season, Carleton was heading into the game focused on fine tuning and avoiding the slow starts that had plagued them of late.
Coming off their previous day’s dominant performance where they didn’t concede a single shot on net, the Ravens returned to action in familiar fashion against Laurentian.
The first half opened with a couple good attempts by Carleton but play continued with both teams having their fair share of midfield action.
Mirroring last week’s matchup, neither team could break through with strong offensive pressure from Carleton and equally strong goaltending from Laurentian.
That all changed in the 27th minute when the Ravens crossed it through the box for Walker Smith (Ottawa, ON), who headed in his first of the game to take a 1-0.
The men added a second goal in the final minutes of the half when they managed to penetrate the defence again. Smith was able to find the back of the net for his second of the afternoon to close out the half up 2-0.
“The first half, we executed how we wanted to,” said head coach Kwesi Loney. “We wanted to make sure we scored in the second half to release some of the pressure on us and put a little more pressure on them.”
Despite maintaining some of possession in the second forty-five, the Ravens struggled to put together any successful attacks. The two teams were in a stale mate, but it was Laurentian that broke loose.
Carleton found itself in trouble as the Voyageurs got the ball back with a tackle and forced it into the box for Nico Correa, who finished the opportunity to cut the Ravens lead to 2-1 in the 76th minute.
The Voyageurs kept up their momentum but the Ravens subdued it in the 84th minute as Gabriel Bitar (Ottawa, ON) picked the bottom corner with a clinical finish to solidify the 3-1 win.
“It was more of a battle. We talked about managing the tempo of the game in the second half,” said Loney. “For a while it was really frantic and really hectic but we were able to get the third and it really put the game out of reach.”
Carleton’s fourth win in a row pushes their record to 9-1-2 ahead of next weekend’s battle against the Queen’s Gaels, who sit middle of the table through 10 games.
“Queen’s is always a tough battler – always very organised and they play very well on the road,” he said. “We need to regroup, make sure our focus is on putting the work in during the week and then come in to get the points.”
The Ravens will look to repeat their three-goal shutout performance from earlier this season in Kingston, again on home turf. Kick-off is set for 3:15 p.m. Saturday at MNP Park.

Ryerson 4 RMC 0
KINGSTON, Ont. - The Rams concluded their weekend in Kingston with yet another unanswered victory, this time going 4-0 over the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins at Navy Bay Fields on Sunday afternoon.
The first half was dominated by a relentless Rams offensive line-up, which seemingly sought to acclaim victory early in the match up. Scoring opened at an early stage in the match, with Ahmed Zabian (San Andres, Colombia) tucking in an unassisted goal in the seventh minute, following an uncontested drive into RMC territory. Shortly after this, in the sixteenth minute, Zabian would claim his second goal of the match with a close-range attempt, putting the Rams up 2-0. The Rams would continue to hold this lead until Kussai Salman (Toronto, Ont.), would put Ryerson up 3-0 in the thirtieth minute, a lead which they would hold going into the second half.
The Rams seemed to have no trouble beginning the second half with the same degree of tenacity with which they had concluded the first. Almost the moment following the blowing of the whistle to signal the start of the final forty-five minutes of play, Ryerson’s Andrew Dias (Toronto, Ont.), would push the Rams lead to 4-0 with a goal from inside the keeper’s box.
Ryerson would go on to hold this lead until the conclusion of the match, and end their weekend road trip in Kingston with a 2-0-0 record.
The Rams will be looking to continue their winning ways on Saturday, October 7 against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The home game will be played at Toronto's Varsity Stadium.

Toronto 1 Queen’s 1
KINGSTON, Ont. (October 1, 2017) – The Queen's Gaels (3-4-3) tied 1-1 in an evenly matched game against the No.6 Toronto Varsity Blues (7-0-4) on Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The Gaels started the game with high intensity but struggled to keep possession of the play. The Tricolour had several close shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net.
In the 28th minute of the game, Kevin Mastri (Oakville, Ont.) received the first yellow card of game for the Gaels. Nearing the end of the first half, Tonko Bacelic (Mississauga, Ont.) received his second yellow card of the weekend.
The Gaels and the Varsity Blues were evenly matched throughout the first half and left the game tied 0-0 at the end of the 45 minutes.
Queen's tried to step up the intensity in the second half to over take the Varsity Blues, but were matched again. They maintained the 0-0 tie until the last 10 minutes of the game when both teams stepped up their game play.
Gaels goalie Alex Jones (Comox, B.C.) was challenged in the second half with numerous shot on net, holding his ground until the Varsity Blues slipped on past in the 85th minute of the game. The Gaels felt the pressure and immediately returned with a fantastic goal from Michael Chang in 86th minute. The game ended with a 1-1 tie.

Western 1 York 1
TORONTO – A late goal from Braeden Gee helped the Western Mustangs earn a 1-1 draw with the U SPORTS No. 9 York Lions on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Mustangs now hold a 6-2-3 record and occupy fourth in the OUA West standings, four points behind Guelph, McMaster and York who are all tied for first place.
Although neither team was able to score in the first half, the Lions held the edge in shots, outshooting Western 8-3 and forcing Mustangs goalkeeper Kody Thomson to make three saves in the first 45 minutes.
Things were a bit more even in the second half, with York holding an 8-5 edge in shots. The Lions were first on the board on Sunday, with Dylan Carreiro converting a ball from Steve Kloutsouniotis to put York up 1-0 at the 74 minute mark.
Western responded with a goal from Gee in the 87th minute to earn the 1-1 draw. Gee's marker was his third of the weekend after tallying both of Western's goals against Windsor on Saturday, and the striker now ranks first among all Mustangs players with five goals this season.

Laurier 1 Guelph 3
GUELPH – Well-timed goals can always make a huge difference in a soccer match. The Guelph Gryphons men's side benefited from a couple of those Sunday afternoon. Johnson Amoo scored twice, on either side of half time, leading Guelph to a 3-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Think Pink day at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
Amoo, a second-year striker from Mississauga, ON, opened the scoring in the 42nd minute of the first half. He tallied again almost immediately after the restart, which enabled the No. 5-ranked Gryphons (8-2-1) to grab a firm hold on the match.
Ryan Vyrostko, a fourth-year midfielder, added a third goal for the hosts.
"The good thing is that we're creating chances," said Guelph coach Keith Mason. "You can't score if you don't create them. We did and I'm happy we took the three points."
Amoo did the finishing with Atchu Siva playing the role of provider in this match. The third-year midfielder had a couple of his own chances in the first half, one from inside the area that went right of the Laurier goalkeeper Ryan Mandryk and another on a lovely bicycle kick that was wide to the left.
But Siva made no mistake on the first goal when he went down the right flank and found Amoo in the Golden Hawks' 18-yard box, where the striker coolly tucked a low shot just inside the right post in the 42nd minute. With the Gryphons up 1-0, Amoo won a one-on-one battle on the right side, raced into the area and again found the back of the net with a low shot just one minute into the second half.
The chances continued to come for the creative hosts and Vyrostko put the match away in the 86thminute, quickly after Laurier had got one back on a Nikola Miokivic goal. Siva sent a bending free kick from the top right corner of the box, which Vyrostko headed home.
"He (Siva) had a fantastic game," said Mason, proud of his veteran. "He's been like that all season. He's come in real sharp, ready to play and been a key player for us."
The Gryphons were without their top scorer Jace Kotsopoulos, who was out with an injury. The Burlington, ON native has scored 10 goals in his first nine matches.
Amoo's two goals gave him three in the past two matches and five on the season. Sive has three goals and three assists.
"It's up to guys like Atchu and Johnny Amoo to step up and fill those shoes and they did that today," said Mason.
"They worked well together."
Simon Norgrove made three saves in net for the Gryphons.
Guelph is back on the pitch Friday, Oct. 6 to face the Brock Badgers in St. Catharines. Match time is 8:15 pm.
