OUA Women's Soccer Roundup (Oct. 1)
September 27, 2017
Laurentian 1 Nipissing 0
Wednesday night served as the 3rd leg of the Riley Gallo Cup and a critical game for the Voyageurs women's soccer team in the OUA East standings. Despite being outshot by their rival, the Nipissing Lakers, the Voyageurs prevailed with a 1-0 victory.
The first half was a back and forth affair, with each team firing three shots on target. The highlight of the opening 45 minutes was Caitlin McNamara stopping the Lakers' Delaney Borsato on a penalty kick late in the half.
The second half began much the same way as the first, with back and forth action, until an opportunity presented itself to Sarah Sanford in the 66th minute. The fourth year striker made no mistake with the chance to give the Voyageurs a 1-0 lead and now sits tied for third in the OUA in scoring with five goals on the year. The Lakers upped their pressure following the goal but McNamara shut the door to preserve the victory with her fourth shutout of the season.
McNamara now sits second in the OUA with a .907 save percentage and fourth in the province with a 0.73 GAA.
The Voyageurs now prepare to host Ottawa on Saturday and Carleton on Sunday as they look to push their win streak to seven. Kick-off is scheduled for 12pm on both days.

Carleton 0 Nipissing 2
If today's game was any indication of the rest of the season, the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team are headed to a strong finish to the year.
The Lakers scored a big 2-0 win over the Carleton Ravens today at Scollard Hall, making it two wins in their past three games, putting them within striking distance of the post-season.
Andrea Young led the way with a goal an assist, while Mykaela Volpe was perfect in net, recording a win and a shutout.
The teams showed off their speed and skill early, but it was the Lakers who would strike first, scoring in the 25 th minute.
Young settled down a loose ball and made no mistake burying her team-leading, seventh goal of the season.
The tally turned out to be the game-winner – her second of the season – as well.
The score remained the same until late in the game when Madison Logan sealed the victory for Nipissing, hammering home a shot from the wing.
Young and Delaney Borsato picked up helpers after great ball movement to push things forward.
After dropping a few games in a row, the Lakers have now picked up six of their past nine points and sit just four points out of a playoff spot.
And they have games in hand on Ryerson, whom they're chasing in the standings.
The Lakers are back on the field Sunday at noon, hosting the Ottawa Gee Gees, who sit in second place in the East Division.
It will be a tough task, but also a great opportunity for Nipissing to make up some ground on the division.
The game will be once again played at Scollard Hall.

Ottawa 1 Laurentian 1
The Voyageurs women's soccer team hosted the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday afternoon as they were looking to extend their winning streak to six but had to settle for a 1-1 tie.
The Gee-Gees, a team the Voyageurs have historically had difficulty with, game out of the gate quick, controlling possession for most of the first half. The Voyageurs, to their credit, were confident in their back line and approached the game with a more defensive mindset. Despite controlling the play, the Gee-Gees lacked any true quality chances and those that they did have were met by stand-out goalkeeper, Caitlin McNamara.
The second began much the way of the first until the 56th minute. A ball was played into the area and headed around the 18-yard box until it fell to the foot of the Gee-Gees midfielder, Katerine Delev, just outside the box. She fired a shot low into the far corner, just outside the reach of McNamara for the 1-0 lead.
That goal seemed to spark the Voyageurs as they began to push play more searching for the equalizer. The answer would come in the 77th minute when Allison Pilon had another superb throw into the 6-yard box and Catherine Rocca was there flick it on with her head, into the far top corner of the net, to knot things up at 1. A few more chances each way would go unanswered as the final whistle blew on the 1-1 tie.
The Voyageurs will now look to continue their unbeaten run to 7 games when they host the Carleton Ravens at the LU Soccer Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 12pm.

Brock 7 Algoma 0
To say the Brock women's soccer team accomplished their mission for the weekend would be a drastic understatement. The Badgers came into the weekend looking to sweep the season series at Algoma and on Sunday they put on a performance before heading home from the Sault.
The Badgers had an incredible 60 shots to Algoma's even. Of those shots, the Brock women's side was able to put 23 on net. Bethany Kromer, who has been excellent all year on defensive, showed she has the offensive touch as well. Kromer potted two goals for the Badgers and for good measure assisted on goals by Ashley Harris and Brooke Boekestyn. Brooke was the one to open the scoring for the Badgers early when she put home an unassisted strike in the 5th minute of the match. Cierra Bernicky added two goals for the Badgers, spacing them eight minutes apart in the second half.
The Algoma keeper, Alexis Trigiani-Kirkwood did her best to handle the absurd amount of shots on goal. She made 16 saves for the Thunderbirds.
In net for the Badgers was Marilena Spagnolo who has now put together a string of excellent performances in net. Spagnolo made the save on the only shot she saw on net all game. This is her 5th shutout of the season.
Up next for the Brock women is the Guelph Gryphons who come to town on Friday. This match is an important OUA West clash. five points separate the team and a win at home would be a huge kick starter in the Badgers making a push up the table.

Ottawa 1 Nipissing 0
The difference in the standings didn't show on the pitch for the Nipissing Lakers women's soccer team, as they hosted the Ottawa Gee Gees Sunday afternoon.
Although they came up short on the scoreboard, losing 1-0 to the Gee Gees, the Lakers held their own against a team that now has a record of 7-1-3.
Coming off a 2-0 victory against Carleton Saturday afternoon, the Lakers hoped to build on that effort and those points and have a strong showing Sunday.
They did, but weren't rewarded as they couldn't capitalize on their chances and the Gee Gees, who have only surrendered eight goals all year, shut Nipissing down effectively for most of the game.
The Lakers' best chances didn't even end up counting as shots, as they fired a few opportunities wide of the net.
The lone goal of the game came from Katherine Bearne, who scored in the 14 th minute.
While Ottawa had more shots, the Lakers did a good job of neutralizing the chances in close.
Mykaela Volpe was beaten just one and finished with six saves – including a few tough ones to keep the game close.
With a weekend split, Nipissing stays in the playoff hunt, currently sitting four points behind Ryerson for the sixth and final post-season position.
A pair of road games are up next for the Lakers, as they travel to face Trent and UOIT on Thanksgiving weekend.
First up it Trent on Saturday, before facing the OUA's only undefeated team Sunday on UOIT.
Both games are set for noon.

Carleton 0 Laurentian 3
Coming off of a hard-fought tie the day before, the Voyageurs women's soccer team was looking to get back into the win column on Sunday. A dominant opening 45 minutes from the squad would ensure that happened as they ran away from the Carleton Ravens 3-0.
Just eight minutes into the game, Kristy Walton earned a free kick outside of the 18-yard box, roughly 10 yards from the end line. Her low entry into the box was met by Catherine Rocca, who fired a shot on goal. The Ravens' Rada Minchev made a great save but the rebound fell to Megan Chiovitti, who made no mistake into the open net.
Just 10 minutes later, after more sustained pressure, a hand ball in the area led to a Sarah Sanfordpenalty kick and the team leader in goals made no mistake, rifling a shot into the top corner. The onslaught continued in the 37th minute when Caitlin McNamara's clearing kick bounced once in front of Sanford who ran onto the ball and, on the half-volley from outside the area, beat Minchev to push the lead to 3-0.
The Voyageurs sat back in the second half, allowing the Ravens some opportunities but McNamara was there to close the door at each turn to earn her 5th shutout of the year.
The women now head to UOIT on Saturday for a date with the undefeated Ridgebacks.

Laurier 0 Guelph 0
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team has typically been used to tight matches with their rival from Waterloo the Laurier Golden Hawks. And their most recent meeting Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex was no different. Neither side could find the back of the net as Guelph and Laurier battled to a 0-0 draw in the annual Think Pink match in support of breast cancer awareness.
The goalless draw wasn't from a lack of creativity on each side. Both the Gryphons and Golden Hawks had chances but the decisive goal never materialized. Laurier outshout the hosts 8-6, with three shots on target to Guelph's two. And each side had to be sharp at key moments to keep the clean sheet.
"It was a tight game," said Gryphons' coach Shayne Campbell. "Early on, we had some really good chances and we didn't convert. Near the end, they had some good, clear chances that they didn't convert either. You got the sense that if someone had scored a goal, it would've been the winner."
They met three times in 2016, a 2-2 draw in Waterloo for the season opener, a 1-0 Gryphons' win at the Gryphon Soccer Complex on Oct. 5 and then in Guelph again for the OUA preliminary round of the playoffs, a 2-1 Guelph win in penalty kicks. The Gryphons did defeat Laurier 3-0 when they played in Waterloo earlier this season, a one-sided result that's been an exception in recent history.
Guelph goalkeeper Libby Brenneman was called upon late to keep her fifth clean sheet of the season. The fourth-year Baden, ON native tipped a Laurier shot from distance over the bar in the 79th minute and moments later, another shot from a scramble in the area just went by the left post.
Campbell was pleased with how Guelph dealt with the late Laurier pressure.
"We bent but we didn't break," he said. "Defensively, we held strong, especially near the end when it was really important."
The Gryphons (6-3-2) were close to goals on a few occasions. One of the best opportunities came in the latter part of the first half when Guelph created a turnover, allowing Venessa Mazur to go in on Laurier goalkeeper Ashley Almeida. Mazur skillfully cut around the keeper but her shot from a tough angle was cleared by a Laurier defender for a Gryphon corner, one of eight in the match.
Late in the half, Alana MacLean won a loose ball on the left side and sent a great pass into the box where Victoria Gunnarson gathered but just missed the right post.
"We couldn't connect that last ball in the box today," Campbell said. "But I was really proud of the effort that the girls displayed. Laurier really pushed at the end for a winner and we hung on and stayed strong until the end."
There was an excellent turnout for the Think Pink match. And the Gryphon Soccer Complex was riddled with pink balloons and ribbons, which were put up by the Gryphon players themselves.
"The girls were up early and about 10 of them took part in the Run for the Cure," said Campbell. "Then they came and decorated.
"You see the importance of the community to our team."
Guelph is back in action Friday, Oct. 6. The Gryphons travel to St. Catharines to face the Brock Badgers at 6 pm.

In the 12th minute of the game Matija Skoko (Toronto) made a beautiful run down the left side of the field, sending a ball through the box and setting up Jamie Foot (North Vancouver, B.C.) for an easy goal.
The Tricolour kept their momentum, sending many more close shots on the Varsity Blues goal. Jenny Wolever(Toronto) made several attacks on goal but it wasn't until the 36th minute that she scored her first goal of the game.
Minutes later, Foot sent a hard shot on goal from the right side, sending a rebound in Wolever's direction. Wolever struck again putting the Gaels up 3-0 over Toronto. To end the second half, Laura Callender (Ottawa) found the back of the net with a quick tap from inside the six yard box making the score 4-0 for the Gaels.
In the second half, the Varsity Blues stepped up their intensity scoring their first goal in the 50th minute of the game. The Gaels respondedwith another goal by Skoko only three minutes later. Following this, the Blues scored again, making the score 5-2. The Gaels ended the game with a goal in the 86th minute, by Sarah Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) assisted by Christie Gray (Vancouver).

Ryerson 5 RMC 0
KINGSTON, Ont. – To cap off their weekend road trip in Kingston, the Rams put on an impressive showcase in skill to sweep through the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins with a 5-0 victory at Navy Bay Fields on Sunday afternoon.
As the whistle blew to begin the match, the Rams wasted no time in placing themselves upon the scoreboard. During the fifth minute of play, Ryerson’s Soraya El-Houni (Toronto, Ont.) faced an uninterrupted charge into Paladin territory to give the Rams their first goal of the match. With confidence high, and the desire to even out their weekend record motivating their actions, the Rams would relentlessly pursue the RMC defensive line-up for the remainder of the half. At the sixteenth minute of the match, Ryerson’s Victoria Watson (Scarborough, Ont.) pushed the team's lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal inside the keeper’s box. The Rams would go on to score two more goals, provided by Jalen Simms (Toronto, Ont.) and Savahnna Robinson (Scarborough, Ont.) respectively, to accumulate a 4-0 lead going into the half.
As the second half of play resumed, the Rams resolve had yet to dwindle as they pressured the Paladins on every part of the field. With Joycelynn Brar (Mississauga, Ont.) providing yet another goal that would push the Rams lead to 5-0 in the forty-ninth minute, combined with the intensity of the Rams play, the end result of the match was a forgone conclusion. Ryerson would go on to overcome the RMC Paladins 5-0 as the final whistle blew.
The Rams will look to continue their triumphant ways on Saturday, October 14, as they take on the Laurentian Voyageurs at LU Soccer Fields in Sudbury.
