OUA ANNOUNCES 2012-13 MEN'S BASKETBALL EAST DIVISION ALL-STARS
The defending national champions Carleton Ravens boast two athletes on the OUA first team. Philip Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) was named CIS player of the year last season and he makes his second consecutive OUA first team appearance in 2013. The third-year guard led the No. 1 Ravens with 18.6 points per game and shot a consistent 45.9 percent from the field. He led Carleton in assists per game (3.4) and continued to perform as one of the most effective and skilled players in the country this season. Ravens teammate Tyson Hinz joins Scrubb on the OUA first team for the third time in his four year career. The six-foot-six forward finished second on the Ravens in both rebounds per game (6.4) and points per game (15.3). The Ottawa, Ont. native grabbed 48 offensive boards this season, good for top five in the OUA.
The neighbouring Ottawa Gee-Gees also list two OUA first team all-stars on their roster in Warren Ward and Johnny Berhanemeskel. Ward, a London, Ont. native, had a standout senior year after sitting out the majority of last season due to injury. The fifth-year guard netted 17.8 points per game, good for second in team scoring, and led the Gee-Gees with 75 assists. Ward grabbed 153 boards and averaged 1.8 steals per game. This is Ward’s third first team honour. Berhanemeskel led the No. 3 ranked Gee-Gees with 18.9 points per game, tucking him just inside the top 15 in CIS scoring.
Ryerson’s Aaron Best rounds out the OUA first team. The second-year guard grabbed 141 rebounds for the Rams, averaging 7.0 boards per game while adding 15.4 points per game. The Scarborough, Ont. native was a member of the OUA all-rookie team last season.
Only a single member of the 2012-13 OUA second team is competing at this weekend’s Wilson Cup. Carleton’s Thomas Scrubb (Richmond, B.C.) earns his first all-star nod after tallying 104 defensive rebounds, 21 steals and 12 blocks this season. He also finished third in team scoring with 12.2 points per game.
The Laurentian Voyageurs have two players voted among the division’s best. Fourth-year guard Manny Pasquale makes his second appearance on the OUA second team, after being named to the OUA first team a year ago. A native of Victoria, B.C., Pasquale accumulated 321 points for the Voyageurs, putting him ninth in OUA scoring. Alex Ratte (Ottawa) finished second in the OUA scoring race with 20.9 points per game. The second-year guard shot 47.0 percent from the field.
Ryerson’s Jahmal Jones (Mississauga, Ont.) makes his first appearance on the OUA second team after being named an OUA first team all-star for two consecutive seasons. The third-year guard helped the Rams to a third place finish in the OUA east. Jones put up a team-best 307 points and dished out 76 assists.
Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) of the Queen’s Gaels rounds out the OUA second team. The third-year guard led the Gaels with 19.9 points per game, seven points per game more than his next closest teammate. Faulkner also averaged 8.2 rebounds per game. This is his first all-star recognition.
The Queen’s Gaels should look forward to the future as Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) and Roshane Roberts (Vaughn, Ont.) have been voted to the OUA all-rookie squad. Singh averaged 29 minutes, 12.2 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. Roberts saw action in all 20 games for the Gaels and dropped 214 points while grabbing 71 rebounds in his rookie campaign.
Also named to the OUA all-rookie team is Mehdi Tihani (Gloucester, Ont.), Juwon Ogunnaike-Grannum (Mississauga, Ont.) and Daniel Tulloch (Mississauga, Ont.). Tihani appeared in every game for the Gee-Gees, started in four, and collected 131 points. Ogunnaike-Grannum averaged 4.0 rebounds per contest and ranked fifth on the Rams with 5.5 points per game. Tulloch posted 11.3 points per game in his rookie season and led the Lions in shooting accuracy, notching 56.8 percent of his attempts from the field.
