HAMILTON, Ont. – A weekly look at noteworthy facts and figures from around Ontario University Athletics (OUA).
0 – The number of undefeated teams in OUA women’s volleyball after the Guelph Gryphons upset the York Lions 3-1 last week. York came into the match winning their first 10 this season, and had sat nationally ranked since October 30, 2012, peaking at No. 4. The Gryphons rode an 18-kills performance from third-year left side Julie Gordon (Barrie, Ont.). York will look to get back to their winning ways this weekend as they host Windsor and Western, while Guelph will look to continue their inspired play as they visit Ryerson and Toronto.
0.988 – The save percentage accumulated last week by Laurier’s Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) on his way to earning Pioneer Energy OUA male athlete of the week and CIS male athlete of the week honours. The fourth-year goalie recorded 36 saves in a shutout win over the then-No. 2 Western Mustangs to snap their 15-game winning streak, and followed that up with a 43-save performance in a 2-1 win over Windsor. In the two game span, Daniels stopped 79 of 80 shots. Daniels’ play of late has been instrumental in Laurier winning five of their last six games. The Golden Hawks return to action this weekend as they host cross-town rivals Waterloo on Friday night, and the Brock Badgers on Saturday, both games at 7:30 p.m.
23.5, 14.5 – Points and rebounds averaged by Brock women’s basketball player Nicole Rosenkranz (Niagara Fall, Ont.) in Badger wins over Guelph and Laurier. The fourth-year forward posted a season high in rebounds with 16 Wednesday as the No. 7 Badgers knocked off Guelph, then put up a season high 27 points in a win over Laurier on Saturday; she recorded a double-double in both games. The dominant weekend led to Rosenkranz being named the Pioneer Energy OUA female athlete of the week.
31 – The single-game high this season in kills in OUA men’s volleyball, which was set over the weekend by Stratford, Ont. native Mike Tomlinson. Tomlinson accomplished the feat while helping lift his Queen’s Gaels team to a 3-2 win over the Windsor Lancers. In the match, Queen’s dropped the first two sets before battling back to take earn the win. The second-year outside hitter also added two aces, two blocks and five digs for the Gaels in the win.
10 – The number of goals on the season for Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey player Callie Bazak after a three-goal performance over the weekend. The Peterborough, Ont., native scored the equalizer with 40 seconds remaining in a matchup with No. 5 Queen’s, which the Blues eventually won in a shootout. The fifth-year engineering major then added two more markers in a 4-3 win over Ryerson to bring her season scoring total into double digits.
90 – The field goal shooting percentage recorded by Matt Schmidt (Thunder Bay, Ont.) of the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a 27-point performance that lifted his squad to a 90-52 win over the Western Mustangs. In the game, the fifth-year forward made nine of 10 from the field, including six of seven from beyond the arc. In the weekend series against Western, Schmidt had a total of 34 points and 10 rebounds.
