OUA BY THE NUMBERS
2 – The number of OUA teams in the CIS men’s volleyball rankings. The McMaster Marauders hold down the second spot in the most recent national poll, while the Waterloo Warriors moved up one spot to No. 9. Ontario’s two ranked teams will meet in the OUA Marquee Matchup on January 18 as Waterloo hosts McMaster at 7 p.m. It will mark the second meeting of the year between the two programs, with McMaster taking a 3-1 decision in November.
36.5 – The number of points collected by York women’s volleyball player Brandie Wilkerson (Innisfil, Ont.) over two weekend wins to earn Pioneer Energy OUA female athlete of the week honours. The third-year outside hitter collected 12 kills and 3.5 blocks for 15.5 points in a 3-0 win over Ryerson, and followed that up with 21 points on 15 kills, three blocks and three aces in a five-set win over Toronto the next day.
7 – The number of days it took Laurier men’s basketball player Max Allin (Chatham, Ont.) to break the school’s single-game scoring record, after teammate Will Coulthard (Oakville, Ont.) tied the mark on January 5. Allin, a fourth-year guard for the Golden Hawks, scored 43 points on 13-for-20 shooting against the Guelph Gryphons on January 12, just one week after Coulthard poured in 39 points to equal the record. Allin also chipped 28 points in the Golden Hawks upset of No. 8 Windsor earlier in the week. He currently leads the CIS in scoring averaging 26.3 points per game. For his remarkable week Allin was named Pioneer Energy OUA male athlete of the week and CIS male athlete of the week.
1 – The current CIS ranking of Toronto Varsity Blues hurdler Hayley Warren in the 60-metre hurdles. The Orillia, Ont., native posted a time of 8.62 seconds at the Can Am Classic at Windsor over the weekend, marking the top time in CIS this season and the second fastest time in University of Toronto history.
15 – The length of the current winning streak by the Western Mustangs men’s hockey team. After starting the season 2-3, the Mustangs have reeled off 15 straight wins, dating back to October 27, 2012 when they downed the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Western features 2011-12 OUA West rookie of the year Zach Harnden (Thunder Bay, Ont.), who with 15 goals ranks second in both OUA and CIS. The Mustangs also boast Matt Clarke (London, Ont.) who with 32 points, including 14 goals, sits tied for third in OUA scoring. Additionally, goalie Josh Unice (Holland, Ohio) holds the CIS lead in wins, with 15.
With one more win, Western will equal their longest winning streak since the 2009-10 season when they also won 16 straight. The historic program holds four of the five longest single season winning streaks in OUA history, with marks of 24, 19, 17 and 16 games. The Mustangs will look to extend the streak when they visit the Laurier Golden Hawks on January 17 at 7:30 p.m.
69 – The number of saves made by UOIT Ridgebacks rookie goalie Cassie Charette on 72 shots over the weekend in OUA women’s hockey action. The Ottawa native made 38 stops in a loss to the nationally ranked Queen’s Gaels, before following it up with 31 saves in a shootout win over York. Charette also turned aside all four York attempts in the shootout.
