TURNBULL AND PERRY NAMED CARLETON ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
TURNBULL & PERRY 2009 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Stuart Turnbull (men's basketball) and Tanya Perry (women's basketball) have been selected as the 2009 Carleton University Athletes of the Year. Turnbull led the men's basketball program to the 2009 CIS men's basketball national championship (W.P. Magee Trophy) by defeating the University of British Columbia, 87-77, at Scotiabank Place (Kanata,
Ont.). The fifth-year veteran commerce major was named the Jack Donohue Trophy recipient as most valuable player of the championship. Turnbull led the Ravens in scoring during the three-day tournament with 64 points for a 21.5 average, including the winning shot at the buzzer against the University of Western Ontario, 66-65, in the CIS semi-final game.
Turnbull, a tri-captain fifth-year senior from Kingston, Ont., led the Ravens in scoring with 368 points in 22 OUA East regular season games for a 16.7 points per game average. Turnbull was named the OUA male athlete of the week for Jan. 26 and Mar. 16, the most valuable player of the House-Laughton Hoops Classic and was named OUA East player of the year and first team OUA East all-star and CIS first team all-Canadian. The veteran guard was also named MVP of the 3rd Annual MBNA Capital Hoops Classic for leading Carleton to an 82-72 victory over Ottawa (he scored 29 points and recorded seven rebounds). Turnbull will graduate with a degree in commerce.
Perry, a fourth-year veteran guard from Barrie, Ont., was named to the OUA East second all-star team and was named the OUA East Division defensive player of the year. She finished the season tied for fifth in the division with 11.3 points per game and fifth in the East with 108 defensive rebounds (5.6 average per game.) Tanya averaged 11.3 points per game during the regular season. Perry becomes the third Raven in the past decade to win the OUA East defensive player of the year award. Rosie Warden (2001) and Dasa Farthing (2004) also received this award in their senior years.
Under Perry's on court leadership, the Ravens won more regular season games this past season (14) then in any other year the team has competed in the modern OUA/CIS system. Perry scored 10 points and pulled down six rebounds as Carleton won a first-ever home post-season game against Queen's, 53-42. The law major receives the Ruth Coe Memorial Award as Carleton's female athlete of the year with the goal of earning a berth in the CIS national championship tournament in her fifth and final year in 2009-10.
DOORNEKAMP & BAXTER HONOURED AS GRADUATING ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Aaron Doornekamp (men's basketball) and Rachel Baxter's (women's water polo) brilliant careers are being celebrated as the graduating athletes of the year. Both student-athletes have won individual and team honours over their five-year careers at Carleton University.
Doornekamp receives the Jack Vogan Memorial Medal (graduating male athlete of the year) as he helps the men's basketball program earn their fourth CIS national championship title in his five years at Carleton University. The veteran forward from Odessa, Ont. won every possible award at Carleton during his career (four CIS national titles, 2008 CIS men's basketball player of the year, 2008 OUA male athlete of the year and BLG nominee as CIS athlete of the year, 2007 CIS championship
tournament most valuable player) and the list of accomplishments shows the great dedication and talent he not only portrayed on the court but to his coaching staff and teammates.
The fifth-year tri-captain and commerce major was second in scoring on the Ravens in 2009 with 303 points in 21 OUA East regular season games. Doornekamp averaged 14.4 points per game, and led Carleton in total rebounds with 146 for a 7.0 average per game. Named a House Laughton Hoops Classic all-star and the most valuable player of the Dalhousie University Rod Shoveller Memorial Tournament. Aaron was named to the OUA East first all-star team and CIS second team all-Canadian.
Baxter, a fifth-year veteran forward from Ottawa, Ont. was the face of the women's water polo program from the first match she played in back in October, 2004. The prolific goal scorer netted 184 career OUA regular and post-season goals in the five years she played for Carleton as she won four scoring titles and two OUA player of the year awards during her career. The Ravens won five OUA medals; two gold (OUA championships), one silver and two bronze during her time in the Ravens' Pool. In her senior year, Baxter scored 43 goals, leading Carleton to an OUA regular season championship with an 8-1-1 record. While Carleton did lose the OUA championship game to Toronto, 13-9, the OUA coaches selected Baxter as the tournament MVP as her presence in the pool for Carleton led to a tournament-high nine goals in two days.
SMART EARNS THE PAT O'BRIEN MEMORIAL COACHING AWARD AS CARLETON'S TOP HEAD COACH IN 2008-09
Dave Smart guided Carleton's men's basketball program to a 24-1 OUA East regular and post-season record to capture the Ravens second straight OUA title (and fifth in Dave's 10-year Carleton career) and was 9-0 in exhibition games against CIS opponents as Carleton won the House-Laughton Hoops Classic (Carleton's tournament in October), the Laval University Tournament (Quebec City in October) and the Rod Shoveller Memorial Tournament (Dalhousie in January). The CIS Coaches Association awarded Dave his third CIS coach of the year award in the past eight seasons. His OUA/CIS regular and post-season career record is an amazing 239-25, a 92 percent winning mark. Dave has guided the Ravens to six CIS national championships. Only Ken Sheilds (University of Victoria) has won more titles (seven).
