OUA golf championship: Toronto women, Western men lead after day one
On the women’s side the Toronto Varsity Blues hold a one stroke lead over the defending champions and hosts Waterloo Warriors with a team total of 240. The Western Mustangs are currently in third with a score of 259.
Individually, Meaghan Pototschnik (Stratford, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers leads the women’s field after shooting a 3-over, 74 on day one. Devon Rizzo (Brantford, Ont.) of the Warriors holds the second spot after a score of 77 while Sarah Dunning (Kitchener, Ont.) fired a 7-over, 78 good for third overall.
In men’s team competition, the Western Mustangs fared well in the difficult conditions with an impressive team total of 9-over, 293. In second place, the Guelph Gryphons are five back with 298 while Toronto holds down the bronze medal position thanks to a team total of 301. Queen’s and Waterloo are tied for fourth both with scores of 304.
Individually the top spot is shared between the only two golfers to shoot under par as Chris Hemmerich (Kitchener, Ont.) from the Gryphons and Philip Arci (Woodbridge, Ont.) of Toronto both shot 1-under, 70. A pair of Mustangs’ are tied for third with Charles Fitzsimmons (Toronto) and Cole Fulton (St. Thomas, Ont.) tallying scores of 1-over, 72.
The golfers are back at it tomorrow in the final round of the OUA Championship with a shotgun start scheduled for 10:30am at Grey Silo.
