DEVON RIZZO WITH A SHOT OF A LIFE TIME
WATERLOO, Ont. - Devon Rizzo has the shot of a lifetime and it might just be coming at the right time for the fourth year Warrior golfer. Rizzo has been granted an exemption to play in the one-day qualifying event for the 2013 Manulife Financial Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Classic.
Rizzo is coming off an impressive second place finish at the Eastern Provinces Championship in Kingston, an event well-known for its deep field of recognized amateur women golfers and appears to be at the top of her game.
Rizzo will compete against more than 20 golfers on Monday, July 8 with the top two from the round advancing to the iconic tournament which begins on Thursday, July 10 at Grey Silo Golf Course in Waterloo. The LPGA has left open two spots for qualification which is to be awarded to local amateurs giving Rizzo the chance to play with the top golfers in the world.
“I am thrilled to be a part of such a high profile tournament and the chance to advance and play with some of the greatest golfers in the world is unlike any feeling I’ve had before,” mentioned Rizzo. “I’m truly humbled and look forward to the opportunity.”
Rizzo, who will be entering her fourth season in the fall, has been nothing short of spectacular since her first season as a Warrior in 2011. In her rookie season, Rizzo collected three Ontario University Athletics (OUA) individual gold medals in just five events played. The Management Engineering student shot the lowest score in OUA women’s golf history twice with her pair of 70’s and led the Warriors to their first ever OUA Championship title. For her efforts she was named the Federation of Students rookie of the year and also earned a spot as a second team OUA all-star.
Rizzo continued her stellar stroke into her second season capturing two more individual gold medals once again leading her squad to an OUA Championship.
The well-decorated golfer established herself as the one to beat during the 2012 OUA women’s golf season. Rizzo jumped out of the gate with three straight individual gold medals to her name including a three-peat at the Guelph Invitational played at the Cutten Club. She would go on to medal at each of the six events played at in 2012 including a silver medal performance at the OUA Championship at the very course she hopes to conquer come July 8, Grey Silo.
For Rizzo, it’s a matter of patience and taking it one shot at a time. “I don’t really have any expectations going into the qualifier. I am going to focus on hitting fairways and staying in the moment. It’s going to be fun and I am honoured to be a part of it.”
The spotlight is nothing new for Rizzo who has been in big scale tournaments including three appearances at the Canadian University/College Golf Championship one of which she took home the top prize (2012). She has also competed at the 2011 World University Golf Championship in China.
“Devon is a well-rounded, confident golfer and I know she will take this opportunity in stride,” mentioned her Warrior coach, Carla Munch. “I’ve seen her in pressure moments, including her playoff win at last year’s Canadian University Championship, and she knows how to handle those types of situations. I don’t expect anything different of her on July 8.”
Defending champion Brittany Lang, former world No. 1 Stacy Lewis and fan favourite Paula Creamer are all expected to attend the second-year tournament at Grey Silo Golf Course.
Those three were the first to confirm for the 2013 Classic and more are expected. Although reluctant to predict a number, tournament director Richard Kuypers said he is confident most of the world’s top players will be back after attracting 17 golfers on the Rolex world rankings and 20 of the top 25 money leaders on the tour in 2012.
“I think at the end of the day, when you come in July, we’ll have most of the top 25 in the world here in Waterloo,” mentioned Kuypers.” We had a good field last year, but we’re looking to have the same or an even better field this year.”
