BURLINGTON, Ont. - The following athletes have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 14th, 2015.
FEMALE: Chloe Graves (Kitchener, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Laurier Golden Hawks – Rugby
The Laurier Golden Hawks women’s rugby team opened up their 2015 with a big 51-17 road victory over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues thanks in large part to the performance of centre Chloe Graves (Kitchener, Ont.)
With the score close, 18-14, the fourth-year Kinesiology student-athlete took over, scoring three consecutive tries to blow the game wide open.
On all three tries, Graves utilized her breakaway speed and strong footwork to elude numerous Varsity Blues defenders on her way to the score.
Graves, a former OUA first-team all-star, had five tries last season and tied for eleventh in OUA with 25 points.
Next up, Graves and the Golden Hawks will travel to St. Catharines, Ont. to take on the Brock Badgers on Saturday at 12:00pm.
MALE: Leighton Speechely-Price (Lymington, England) – 3rd yr – Windsor Lancers – Soccer
The Lancers men's soccer team swept their opening weekend at home with a pair of shutout victories over the Waterloo Warriors and Laurier Golden Hawks and received all the goal support they would need from forward Leighton Speechely-Price (Lymington, England).
On Friday evening, Speechely-Price, a third-year Business student-athlete, opened the scoring in the 12th minute against the Waterloo Warriors and the Lancers never looked back. Speechely-Price would add two more goals late in the 44th and 55th minutes to complete the hat trick as Windsor defeated Waterloo 6-0.
On Saturday, the 6’5” 195 lbs forward once again opened the scoring in the 42nd minute against the Laurier Golden Hawks. The Lancers would add another in the second half, defeating the Golden Hawks 2-0, with Speechely-Price scoring the game winning goal in both games.
Through six games this season, Speechely-Price leads OUA and CIS with seven goals. The Lancers have opened the season with a 4-1-1 record and find themselves keeping pace with the defending CIS champion York Lions atop the OUA West division.
Windsor welcomes the Algoma Thunderbirds to Alumni Field for a weekend doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday. Both games are scheduled to kickoff at 3:15pm.
