The University of Ottawa men's hockey team was on home ice for a pair of battles on home ice. With a handful of players returning from injury, first time goal scorers, and a Friday night shutout, this was a significant weekend for this Gee-Gees team.
Friday night's contest was a 3-0 victory for the Gee-Gees as they took on the Nipissing Lakers. While the game was penalty filled on both sides, the Gee-Gees managed to make the most of it.
Peter Stratis was the opening goal scorer, capitalizing on an early powerplay. Towards the end of the first period, Ottawa had built a two-goal lead with a goal from Mathieu Desgagnes.
The second period welcomed a career highlight as Cam Gauvreau redirected a rebound past Nipissing's goalie for his first U SPORTS goal.
Gauvreau's goal was the last of the evening, and Gee-Gees goaltender Zach Dietz had stopped all 28 shots against him to hold the shutout.
Ottawa head coach, Patrick Grandmaitre, was happy to see his goalie succeed.
"Zach Dietz did a great job, we're happy for him," Grandmaitre said.
"I put in a lot of work," Dietz said. "There were some huge blocks near the end, and we played a really good game and that allowed me to get a shutout. It was a full team effort if anything."
The Gee-Gees got out to a hot start on Saturday afternoon against Windsor Lancers. Another first timer hit the score sheet when Mitch Martin bagged the first goal of the day. Zach Giroux added one more to make it a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Ottawa maintained their momentum throughout the second and third periods. Marc-Antoine Seguin added to the goal count, and Martin added his second of the night. Halfway through the third, Charles-Antoine Roy found the back of the net.
The Lancers managed to get a goal on the board, but Brad Chenier was quick to respond with a shot through the five-hole. Giroux fired one in on a powerplay opportunity, and the Gee-Gees put together a 7-1 win.
Next weekend, the Gee-Gees are on the road. The squad will take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
