The University of Ottawa women's hockey team was on home ice for a Thursday night meeting with the Queen's Gaels.
Reece Mepham was the spark in what started off as a relatively quiet opening period. Receiving a drop pass from Angelique Proulx, Mepham launched the puck from deep, sending it past the Gaels' goaltender to give the Gee-Gees a 1-0 lead.
Both teams came out firing in the second period, each finding the net within the first moments. The Gaels struck first coming out of the break, but the Gee-Gees wasted no time.
Gillian Warren snatched the puck from a Queen's defender and sent it to the front of the net where Alyssa Biesenthal was poised and ready. Biesenthal's goal restored the Ottawa lead.
Queen's found a shorthanded opportunity with only a minute left on the clock. The Gaels' goal evened the score at 2-2 with only 45 seconds left in the period.
That was enough time for the Gee-Gees leading scorer to hit the mesh. Arianne Gagnon flipped the puck off a rebound for last second goal to put the Gee-Gees back on top and send the teams to the locker room for the second intermission.
The teams played another fast-paced period, but neither squad were able to find the net in the final 20 minutes of action.
Ottawa picked up the 3-2 win and will get some time to rest. The Gee-Gees are back in action on Feb. 7 when they go to Kingston for a rematch with the Gaels.
