The Gee-Gees men's hockey team had mixed results with three games in four days against Eastern Ontario foes starting with a dominant win over RMC, before dropping two games to Carleton, including an overtime loss a Colonel By Classic thriller.
Wednesday – Ottawa 5, RMC 1
The Gee-Gees started the week strong with a convincing 5-1 win over RMC at home on Wednesday night. Ottawa set the tone early, with Zach Giroux and Kaden Bryant scoring early for a 2-0 lead by the middle of the first period.
Peter Stratis extended the lead in the second period with a power play goal, followed by a tally from Brad Chenier to make it 4-0. Alexis Bonefon capped the night with a third-period goal to secure the 5-1 win.
Zach Dietz got the start in net and made the most of his time between the pipes, stopping 23 of 24 shots.
Friday – Carleton 6, Ottawa 3
In their second game of the week, the Gee-Gees faced off against rival Carleton Ravens on Friday night in a heated affair.
Stratis gave the Gee-Gees an early lead with a power play goal as the lone tally in the first frame.
The second period proved to be one of the wildest of the season, with Carleton scoring three goals to take the lead. Ottawa fought back with goals from David Lafrance and Mathieu Desgagnés to tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third period.
Carleton responded with two goals to jump in front before an empty netter sealed a 6-3 win for the Ravens. The heated nature of the game saw 18 total penalties, including 28 minutes on 10 infractions from the Gee-Gees.
Saturday (Colonel By Classic) – Carleton 5, Ottawa 4 (OT)
The rematch on Saturday in the Colonel By Classic at TD Place was a heartbreaker for Ottawa, as they came up just short in a wild 5-4 overtime loss to Carleton.
Brad Chenier opened the scoring with a power play goal early in the second period, but Carleton answered quickly with two goals of their own to take the lead.
Ottawa continued to show their resilience, with Andrew Belchamber and Brendon Clavelle scoring in the second, to tie the game at 3-3.
A Ravens' goal early in the third period had the Gee-Gees pushing for an equalizer for the remainder of the third. Ottawa got another chance at life with an amazing tally from Belchamber as Carleton held a 5-on-3 advantage with less than a minute left. With the Ravens' goalie out of his crease, Belchamber picked off the puck and fired it into the net to send the game to overtime.
The Ravens went on to score in overtime to claim the win, despite the late game heroics from Ottawa.
