GUELPH SWEEPS OUA CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM TITLES
The University of Guelph has now captured five-straight OUA women's titles, while earning four straight on the men's side. The Gryphons entered the race as the No. 1-ranked cross-country programs in the nation.
In the women's five-kilometre race, Brown clocked a time of 17:26.1 to take her second individual OUA title. She had won her first OUA individual title on the same course in 2006 and won the Queen's Invitational on the Fort Henry Hill course on Oct. 4.
"Today was one of the strongest runs I've ever run," said Brown. "I ran exactly to my fitness and I'm in the best shape of my life right now. I'm very pleased with where I'm at right now."
Brown was followed by Guelph's Lindsay Carson (Cambridge, Ont.) who crossed the line in 18 minutes flat. Third place went to Tamara Jewett (Toronto, Ont.) of the Varsity Blues who finished with a time of 18:24.6. Jewett was also the top rookie in the race. Toronto's Erin McClure (Waterloo, Ont.) and Guelph's Rachel Cliff (Vancouver, B.C.) rounded out the Top 5 placing fourth and fifth respectively.
Guelph earned their fifth straight OUA Cross-Country banner posting 47 points, while Toronto was second with 64 points. McMaster finished third at 88 points. Host Queen's finished in sixth place.
On the men's side, Guelph collected the top two podium positions with Brett claiming the 10 km race in 33:23.3 while teammate Matt Brunsting (Sterling, Ont.) was three seconds behind at 33:36.9. Western's Kyle O'Neil (Vienna, Ont.) crossed the line third at 33:29.1.
"It was really tactical out there because of the wind,” said Brett. “Whenever we hit a wind spot, we'd slow right down and it stayed like that most of the race until one person made a break. With a lap to go, I was feeling good and threw the hammer down to break away from the rest of the field."
Windsor's Matt Sinclair (Calgary, Alta.) finished fourth while Western's Ryan Armstrong (St. Thomas, Ont.) placed fifth.
Guelph finished first with 29 points while Windsor was second and Western finished third. Host Queen's duplicated the women's team result by placing sixth.
Guelph's Rob Jackson (Guelph, Ont.) was the top rookie on the men's side with a time of 33:59.8.
Dave Thomas-Scott of the Gryphons was awarded the Coach of the Year honours in the men's discipline while Rory Sneyd of the McMaster Marauders took the women's Coach of the Year. The Top 14 runners at the championship are named OUA All-Stars.
