KIP SIGSWORTH JOINS LAKEHEAD ATHLETICS
While at Lakehead, Sigsworth was the Captain of the Lakehead Track and Cross Country teams from 1994-96, two-time OUA medallist in the 600 metres, an OUA Track All Star, two-time Lakehead Track MVP, an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 800 metres in 1996, and a CIAU Academic All-Canadian in 2000.
Sigsworth is replacing departing coaches Mike and Maureen Hay who will be moving to Sudbury. Sigsworth also joins Lakehead at an important juncture of its track and cross-country programs with the advent of the new "Hangar" Indoor track and athletic centre which opened at the beginning of March.
Lakehead Athletics Director Tom Warden said Sigsworth is a very positive addition to the Thunderwolves family. "We're very pleased to have somebody of Kip's calibre step in for Mike and Maureen and I'm very confident that he will bring our track and cross country programs to the next level. He joins us at a very opportune time with the opening of our new indoor track which should help with the recruiting, training, and development of these programs."
Sigsworth was an assistant coach for the Thunderwolves as well as an assistant with the Superior Athletics Track Club while a Lakehead student. Sigsworth was also a lecturer and teaching assistant on Human Performance at McGill University's Physical Education Department from 1998-2001. He was also Head Coach and President of the Club Kip Track Club, a senior level athletes' track club, from 2001 to the present. Sigsworth also worked at Appleby College in Oakville from 2002 to 2004 as a physical education teacher, assistant cross country coach, and Winter Education Facilitator for the school's Northward Bound program.
Sigsworth has his NCCP Level One Technical Certification in track and field, cross country skiing, and volleyball as well as Level Two Certification in Theory. Additionally, he is a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and a certified indoor wall-climbing instructor.
Sigsworth is looking forward to the challenge of moving to Thunder Bay and building the Thunderwolves into an OUA contender. \"I am extremely excited to be back at Lakehead University and thrilled to be given this opportunity to help to further develop the track program. With the new indoor track and the momentum that Mike and Maureen Hay have built over the last few years the future looks bright. High school track and field in Thunder Bay is strong and I believe that local athletes will be a great source of talent in the coming years to compliment our strong core of current athletes.\"
Coach Sigsworth is currently hard at work on the recruiting trail looking for new student athletes for next season's Lakehead teams.
