Name: Nicole Sassine
School: University of Windsor Lancers
Sport: Track and Field
Program: Education
Year of Study: 5
Nicole Sassine ended her five-year track and field career at Windsor in 2011-12 as one of the most prominent student-athletes in Lancer history. In her final season, the 22-year-old was named CIS female athlete of the year in track events and captured the Dr. Wendy Jerome Trophy as the OUA’s overall female MVP. A four-time medalist at the OUA championships – including two gold – and three-time medalist at the CIS meet, she guided the Lancer women to a fourth OUA team title in five campaigns and a fourth consecutive CIS banner.
An A+ student in human kinetics before entering teacher’s college, the Windsor native was an Academic All-Canadian, a member of the Dean’s Achievement List and a member of the President’s Honour Roll each of the past four years. A former recipient of the Lancer Blue & Gold Scholarship, she merited the 2011-12 DeMarco Award as the top female student-athlete at the University of Windsor.
Nicole was also named a CIS Academic Top 8 for the 2011-12 season, being the fifth Lancer in seven years to capture the honour.
What is your proudest academic achievement?
My proudest academic achievement is being the recipient of the 2011-2012 DeMarco Award at the Lancers Athletic Banquet last year. This award is given to the student-athlete who best combines academics and athletics. Being a student-athlete is a very difficult task that involves a lot of dedication and time-management, and to be praised for that was a proud accomplishment knowing that all of that hard work really paid off.
What is your proudest athletic achievement?
My proudest, and most memorable athletic achievement was the 2011-2012 Lancer Track & Field Season. To me, some of the greatest achievements are those that are unexpected. I was proud to be named co-captain of the Women's Track & Field Team that year, alongside teammate Kelsi Mayne. As a team we were underdogs going into both the OUA and CIS Championships, yet we strongly defended both titles once again. In addition to the team victory, I too had one of my best, and somewhat unexpected, seasons as a Lancer.
What is your most memorable community related moment?
There is nothing more rewarding than knowing that you have made a positive impact on a child's life. When volunteering at my elementary school, I was reminded that I was making a difference everyday. Watching a child develop and progress is an incredible experience and a feeling that I hope to have everyday in the career I choose.
What woman has most influenced you, and why?
I must give the most cliché response, yet without a doubt the truest, my mother. I find my mother to be a very inspiring person; the reasons for this are endless. She has always gone out of her way to do anything for anyone, without question. She displays the kind of confidence, kind spirit, and generosity that I hope to demonstrate in my life. And on top it all off, she is hilarious.
What are your future plans?
Since graduating, I have continued to pursue and accomplish some goals of mine in Track & Field. There are still some things to check off that list so I am training and competing while I still love it and continue to improve. In the near future I plan on pursuing a career in one of my fields, whether it be Kinesiology or Education.
