Blues' Brown and Gryphon Romaniw earn Pioneer Energy OUA athlete of the week honours

FEMALE: Alicia Brown, Toronto Varsity Blues, Track and field
Fifth-year veteran Alicia Brown won three gold medals in leading the Varsity Blues women’s track and field team to a silver-medal finish at the 2013 CIS championships at the University of Alberta this past weekend (March 7-9). The Ottawa native helped Toronto’s 4x200 relay team to a new CIS and Canadian record, running a 24.1 second split to cross the finish line in 1:36.53. Brown then anchored the 4x400m relay team to a first-place finish, also on Saturday night, finishing in a time of 3:42.90. Brown opened the weekend with a gold medal in the women’s 300m on Friday night, crossing the finish line in 38.63 seconds. The Varsity Blues finished second at the CIS championship, 3.50 points shy of first-place Calgary.
MALE: Anthony Romaniw, Guelph Gryphons, Track and field
Third-year runner Anthony Romaniw captured three medals in leading the Guelph Gryphons men’s track and field team to a first-place finish at the 2013 CIS Championships this past weekend in Edmonton. The Hamilton, Ont. native tallied 21.25 points, the most of any athlete in the competition and was also the only athlete to capture three medals. The Human Kinetics student won gold and broke the school record in the men’s 600m with a time of 1:18.20. He also won gold as a member of the 4x800m relay, running the first leg as the Gryphons crossed the line in 7:31.62, a full two seconds ahead of the previous school record. In addition he earned a silver medal in the men’s 1000m race. Romaniw’s win in the 600m race, was the turning point of the meet, putting the Gryphons in flight as they overtook the Windsor Lancers with a fantastic final day to win their third national title in the last six years.
