Western men's and women's rowing crowned OUA Champions
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Western University men's and women's rowing teams took home both titles Saturday at the 2015 OUA Rowing Championship hosted by Brock University at St. Catharines Henley Island.
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Western University men's and women's rowing teams took home both titles Saturday at the 2015 OUA Rowing Championship hosted by Brock University at St. Catharines Henley Island.
The Western women dominated the field, taking home six golds and four silvers for a total of 590 team points. The Queen's Gaels took home silver (290 points) and Brock Badgers bronze (261 points).
Capturing gold for the Mustangs women were the 8+, 4+, lightweight 8+, Lightweight 4+, pair, double. They also added silver medals in the Lightweight double, Lightweight pair, Lightweight single and single.
Other gold medals on the women's side went to the Brock women's double and Lightweight pair, Ottawa Lightweight single and Laurentian single.
In a tight race, down to the last event of the day, the Western Mustangs men's team dethroned the defending champion Brock Badgers, finishing with four gold and four silver for a total of 501 team points. Brock took home silver (468 points) and Trent bronze (292 points).
Western men captured gold in the Lightweight 8+, Lightweight 4+, Lightweight pair and single. They were also second in the Men's Heavyweight 8+, Heavyweight 4+, Heavyweight pair and Heavyweight double.
The Brock men won gold in the Men's Heavyweight 8+, Heavyweight 4+ and Heavyweight pair. The Badgers also finished second in the Lightweight 8+, Lightweight 4+, Lightweight single and Lightweight double.
The Trent men's team also captured three gold, winning the Lightweight single, Lightweight double and Heavyweight double events.
Brock Badgers Dave De Groot was named the OUA Male Rower of the Year while Laurentian's Emily Jago took home OUA Female Rower of the Year honours. Western's Bob Ward was named the Women's Coach of the Year, while Trent Excalibur's Jack Lapum was named the Men's Coach of the Year.
