(GATINEAU, QC) — Following a successful opening to the 2016 OUA Nordic Skiing Championship yesterday, the Lakehead Thunderwolves showed no signs of slowing down as the team struck gold in both the men's and women's 3×2.7km Team Relay Classic on Saturday.
After winning gold in both the women's and men's 7.5km Interval Free events on Friday, the Thunderwolves added a pair of team relay titles in less than ideal weather conditions on Saturday morning at the Nakkertok Nordic Cross Country Ski Club.
Lakehead 1 (24:57.0), whose team included two of yesterday's men's 7.5km podium finishers – Gavin Shields (gold) and Chris Hamilton (silver) – as well as Geoff Way-Nee, triumphed in the 3×2.7km race to capture gold. Nipissing 1 (25:34.9) finished thirty-seven seconds behind in second place with Jordan Cascagnette – yesterday's 7.5km bronze medalist – completing the team's anchor leg. Lakehead 2 (26:10.0) concluded a successful men's team event for the Thunderwolves by finishing in third place.
In the second event of the day, the women's 3×2.7km Team Relay Classic was won with relative ease as Lakehead 1 – comprised of Camille Hamm, Bryana Van Leeuwen, and Alysson Marshall (7.5km Interval Free gold medallist) – took home the top prize as the team finished nearly two minutes earlier than its closest competitor. Carleton's women's team continued its successful weekend, with Alex Slobodian, Megan Evans and Emilie Stewart-Jones all earning a silver medal for a second-place showing. Nipissing 1 rounded out the top three as its skiers showed determination to capture a bronze.
The Ravens' best result in the men's team relay came courtesy of Carleton 2 (26:38.0), who outpaced Carleton 1 (26:55.0) to finish in fourth position. On the women's side, Carleton 2 (33:50.0) just missed the podium as the team wound up in fourth.
The 2016 OUA Nordic Skiing Championship will conclude tomorrow with the women's 10km mass start 2x5km and the men's 15km mass start 3x5km, followed by the presentation of the final race awards and championship team banners.
