(GATINEAU, QC) -- The Lakehead men's and women's Nordic ski teams are off to a terrific start following the completion of Day 1 events at the 2016 OUA Nordic Skiing Championship hosted by Carleton University.
In a combined effort, the Thunderwolves men's and women's teams collected three out of a possible six podium places - including two gold medals - on a chilly afternoon at Nakkertok Nordic Cross Country Ski Club.
The day started well for Lakehead in the men's 7.5 km Interval Free race, as Gavin Shields (18:41.8) claimed the day's first gold medal. Teammate Chris Hamilton (18:46.2) crossed the finish line just behind Shields to place second, while Nipissing's Jordan Cascagnette (18:53.7) rounded out the top three with a bronze medal result.
In the women's 7.5 km Interval Free race, Lakehead's Alysson Marshall (21:12.1) had an outstanding performance as she outpaced the rest of the field by over a minute and a half to capture gold. Carleton's Megan Evans (22:47.6) finished her lap with the second best time of the day to earn a silver medal, and teammate Alex Slobodian (23.01.6) put the Ravens in title contention with a third place result.
While the host Ravens men's team did not earn a medal on Day 1, the team did occupy five of the top ten places in the 7.5 km event and were led by Carrington Pomeroy (19:06.8), who finished in fourth. Carleton's women's team also dominated the 7.5 km top ten list as the group finishe with six top-ten results.
The 2016 OUA Nordic Skiing Championship resumes tomorrow as the men's and women's 3×2.7km Team Relay Classic races take place.
