Blues help Canada to 10th place finish at FISU Games
University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's water polo players Michael Chapman and Paul Spooner helped Canada to a 10th place finish at the 2017 FISU Summer Universiade in Taipei.
Canada finished 2-5 at the Summer Universiade. The Red & White went 1-2 in pool play, defeating South Africa 8-4, before falling to the United Kingdom 7-6 in the Round of 16. Canada went onto defeat the Republic of Korea, 9-4, to face the United States in the 9th/10th match. There, Canada fell 18-8 to the USA.
Chapman ended the tournament with two goals.
The duo represent a Varsity Blues program that has been dominant in the OUA, winning 10 of the last 15 provincial championships and 31 overall in program history. Spooner earned OUA all-star recognition this past season, while Chapman previously earned those honours in 2014. Joining the student-athletes was Varsity Blues women's water polo coach George Gross Jr., who served as a team leader for Canada's men's water polo team in Taipei.
