OUA MEN'S WATER POLO CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW
The Carleton Ravens will look to make it back-to-back titles as they host the 2012 OUA men’s water polo championship, running from November 16-18 at Carleton University.
The Ravens boast a lineup that features three 2011 OUA all-stars, in the brother duo of Charles and Ben Bouwer (Ottawa), and Ognjen Gutovic (Cacak, Serbia). Charles Bouwer is a clutch player for the Ravens, having scored the game-winning goal in Carleton’s 9-8 gold medal win over Toronto last season. Gutovic also has some scoring punch, collecting three markers in the 2011 semifinal. Ben Bouwer will provide stability in goal for the Ravens, as he returns for his second season in the pool.
The Toronto Varsity Blues will be looking to climb back to the top of the podium after finishing second to Carleton last season. The Varsity Blues have a winning tradition that includes seven of the last 10 OUA championships. Leading the way for Toronto will be three-time OUA all-star Alan Chung (Ajax, Ont.), and fourth-year sniper Luke Spooner (Auckland, N.Z). Toronto enters the OUA championship with a record of 8-1 against other OUA schools in 2012; their only defeat being a 12-10 loss to Carleton.
The McMaster Marauders took home the bronze medal in 2011, and will look to improve on that position this year. Set to guide the Marauders through the championship is fourth-year veteran Jack Park (Waterdown, Ont.), who has been an OUA all-star in each of his first three seasons.
Rounding out the field at the 2012 OUA men’s Waterpolo championship are Ottawa, Queen’s, York and Western.
