QUEEN'S AND RYERSON FINISH THE SEASON WITH VICTORIES
The Toronto Varsity Blues (9 - 11) started strong against the league leading No.7 Queen’s Golden Gaels (18 – 2) but were only able to wrestle one set from the defending OUA Champions, as Queen’s took the win 3-1. The Golden Gaels narrowly won the first set by a score of 29 – 27, as both teams pounded back and forth during the final points of the set. The Blues took the second set 25 – 22 on the strength of Brendan Peel (Whitby, Ontraio), who had a game high 21 kills. Andrew Bridgeman (Niagara Falls, Ontario) and Daniel McCrae (Brampton, Ontario) led the Golden Gaels to victory in the third and fourth sets, finishing the game with 17 and 15 kills respectively. Queen’s setter Devon Miller (Barrie, ON) had 58 assists in the victory. The Golden Gaels also escaped with a 3 – 2 victory over the RMC Paladins rallying back after being down 2 - 0 on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Gaels will now face the winner of Western and York’s quarter-final match up.
Ryerson 3, York 0
Ryerson (16 – 4) bounced back from their loss to division leading Queen’s Golden Gaels on February 3, 2007 with a 3 – 0 (25 – 18, 25 – 21, 25 – 20) sweep of the visiting York Lions (14 – 6), finishing the season second in the OUA. Ryerson giant Ryan Vandenburg (Wooler, Ontario) led the way for the Rams, with 13 kills, while fifth year senior Anton Hauser (Toronto, Ontario) added 11 kills. The Lions put up a good fight but were unable to capitalize on a number of opportunities, led by Ryan Anderson’s (Manitoulin Island, Ontario) eight kills. Ryerson will host the winner of McMaster vs. Toronto in semi-final action February 17, 2007.
