Queen's Cup: Stingers top Lions 3-2 to earn OUA bronze and advance to U SPORTS championship
MONTREAL, Que. - The York University Lions men's hockey team made its way to Montreal to take on the Concordia Stingers in the OUA bronze medal game on Friday night and were defeated by a score of 3-2 at Ed Meagher Arena to have its season come to an end.
Not only was a medal on the line, but so was the final spot in the U SPORTS tournament next weekend in Fredericton. The Lions fought hard to the very end but came up just short in their quest to return to the national championships for the second straight year.
The first period quickly turned tense when the Stingers were able to score first. Scott Oke scored with the assistance of Antoine Masson and Alexandre Gosselin.
Later in the period, Scott Feser was able to set up a beautiful play in front of the Stringers' net, which allowed Daniel Nikandrov to score for the Lions. This brought the score up to a 1-1 tie and remained this way until the end of the period. Nikandrov was also assisted by Nik Coric.
The score would remain this way through to the end of the second period as well. Despite many chances, neither team had any success scoring.
Nine seconds into the third period the Stingers put the puck past Mack Shields to regain the lead at 2-1. Philippe Hudon scored, and Massimo Corozza and Anthony Beauregard assisted.
Eight minutes later, Hudon added another goal for the Stingers in the midst of a chaotic scene in front of the Lions' net. Beauregard and Matthieu Desautels drew assists on this goal that made the score 3-1.
The Lions started working on a comeback when Trevor Petersen – assisted by Colton Vannucci and Morgan Messenger – brought the score up to 3-2 at 12:02 in the third period.
In the end, however, the Lions could not tie the score and force the game into overtime, and fell to the Stingers 3-2.
The Lions' season is now over with their fourth-place finish, while the Stingers will head to Fredericton next week for the U SPORTS championships.
