Carleton 4 Western 3
LONDON, ON- The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs 4-3 in their first road game of the season at Thomson Arena.
The Mustangs opened the scoring early with winger Anthony Stefano beating Ravens goalie Francois Brassard (Gatineau, QC) for an early 1-0 lead.
A minute later Western took a penalty and Carleton would erase the lead. Ravens defenceman set up Brett Welychka (London, ON) who buried a one timer, glove side to tie the game at 1-1.
The Ravens struck again on the power play with Alexandre Boivin (Ottawa, ON) sliding into the slot, taking a pass from Dalen Hedges (Ottawa, ON) and firing a wrist shot past Mustangs goalie Dan Davies.
11 minutes later Carleton extended their lead to 3-1 when Adam Chapman (Barrie, ON) found a rebound of Jared Steege's (Cobden, ON) wrist shot and he shoveled it in the net for his first goal of the season.
With three minutes remaining in the second period Western cut Ravens lead to one when Western forward Adam Sinclair beat Brassard with a wrap around.
Five minutes into the third, Western defenceman Rylan Ball took a cross checking penalty and the Ravens converted. After a scramble in front of the Western net, Hedges poked the puck into the open cage to make it 4-2 for the Ravens.
After Ravens forward Ryan Van Stralen (Prescott, ON) took a penalty for goaltender interference, Mustangs forward, Spenser Cobbold scored on a point shot with traffic in front of Brassard to draw Western within one.
The Mustangs pulled the goalie for an extra attacker but, the Ravens were able to hold of their efforts sealing the win.
Ravens head coach Shaun Van Allen was happy to get the win and praised the special teams.
"We finished plus 2 on special teams and every time we have (finished plus 2) we have won," said Van Allen. "We have some awfully talented guys and we try and give them a bit of freedom out there. We want to establish the point shot with traffic in front."
The Ravens continue their road trip heading on to Windsor tomorrow, Saturday, October 21 to take on the Lancers.

Queen's 1 Toronto 2
Second-year defenceman Evan MacEachern scored both goals as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Queen's Gaels 2-1 in overtime on Friday night (Oct. 20) at Varsity Arena.
Tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, MacEachern wasted no time in the 3-on-3 overtime period, going coast-to-coast and beating Gaels goalie Jacob Brennan top shelf just 1:08 into the frame.
Rookie goalie Frederic Foulem was kept busy, making 15 saves in the first frame alone, en route to a 28-save performance in the win.
The Blues got on the score sheet first late in the first frame as MacEachern sent a point shot through traffic to find the bottom left corner of the net.
After a scoreless second period, Gaels forward Luke Bertolucci deflected a centering shot to even the score just four minutes into the third frame, ultimately forcing overtime.
The Blues are back in action tomorrow (Oct. 21) to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

UQTR 3 Lakehead 1
The Lakehead Thunderwolves were downed 3-1 by the Quebec-Three Rivers Patriotes in front of 2094 fans at the Fort William Gardens on Friday night.
The pace of play was quite quick in the first period with plenty of back-and-forth action and very few whistles. Neither team was able to score as both goalies (Nic Renyard for Lakehead and Sebastien Auger for UQTR) were very sharp.
In contrast to the evenly-played opening period, UQTR dominated the second, outshooting Lakehead 20-2. Antoine Marcoux got the only goal of the middle frame with a short-handed marker at 7:14 to put the Patriotes up 1-0.
Lakehead regrouped and played much better in the third, tying the game just 35 seconds after the opening face-off on a power play goal by Patrick Murphy, with the assists going to Jake Ringuette and Scott Gall.
Three minutes later, Jason Lavellee replied for the Patriotes by firing the puck past Renyard from the top of the crease after receiving a quick pass from the side of the net.
Lavellee added another at 11:35 put UQTR ahead 3-1.
Lakehead pulled Renyard for an extra attacker with two minutes left on the clock and the Wolves had several good scoring chances, but Auger was equal to the task and the Patriotes held on for the win.
Shots on goal for the night were 41-27 in favor of the Patriotes.
Lakehead was 1-for-4 on the power play, while UQTR went 1-for-3.
The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
1. Jason Lavellee, UQTR
2. Nic Renyard, Lakehead
3. Sebastien Auger, UQTR
The Thunderwolves and Patriotes will face-off again tomorrow night beginning at 7:00 PM.

Guelph 4 McGill 7
MONTREAL -- Alexandre Sills of Amos, Que., tallied his first career hat-trick as the McGill Redmen rallied from an early two-goal deficit to topple visiting Guelph 7-4 in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena on Friday.
It marked McGill's sixth consecutive win over the Gryphons -- the league's defending Queen's Cup champions -- and improved their lifetime record to 30-13-5 in head-to-head matches. In a wild, high-scoring affair, the host team outshot their guests by a 53-32 margin, including a staggering 28-8 advantage in the middle frame. The 28 shots matched the second highest output in a period in McGill history and was three shy of the school record -- also achieved in the second period -- against RMC on Jan. 31, 2000.
This game had everything except the kitchen sink. There were three power-play goals, two shorthanded markers and even a penalty shot, which was missed by Christopher Lalonde, who hit the goal-post on his attempt midway through the second period. The two shorties tied the single-game school record accomplished numerous times and was the first occurrence in seven years, since a 7-1 win over Queen's on Oct. 23, 2010.
Sills, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound centre who registered a stellar 16-4-1 record in the faceoff circle, netted each of his goals in different situations. His first came at even strength at 8:03 of the second period, tying the game at 2-2. His second was on the man-advantage with 28 seconds left in the middle frame to put McGill ahead 5-3. The mechanical engineering sophomore then scored a shorthanded marker at 12:53 of the third to close out the scoring. With five goals in as many games, Sills has already surpassed his total of four in 17 games during his injury-plagued freshman campaign.
After Guelph jumped to an early 2-0 lead with goals by Todd Winder at 2:27 and by Manny Gialedakis on the power play at 11:29 of the first, defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que., got things going for the home side at 15:03 of the period.
Sills opened the second period scoring, followed by Samuel Tremblay of St. Basile, Que., at 10:21 and Francis Lambert-Lemay of St. Ours, Que., at 11:21. The Gryphons' Max McCutcheon narrowed the gap to 4-3 at 11:43 but Sills restored the Redmen's two-goal lead.
Cody Thompson opened the third-period scoring for the Gryphons with a power-play goal at 5:18. McGill rookie Quinn Syrydiuk of Toronto netted his first career goal, a shorthanded tally at 6:14 -- his teammates collected the souvenir-- and Sills then followed up with his own shorty just six minutes later.
Along with Sills, Talbot-Tassi (1-2-3) and teammate Jerome Verrier (0-3-3) of Drummondville, Que., had three-point nights for the Redmen.
McGill netminder Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., made 28 saves on 32 shots to earn the win.
Guelph goalie Andrew Masters registered 46 saves, in a losing cause, including 20 stops in the second stanza.
The Redmen were 1-for-5 with the man-advantage while Guelph was 2-for-6.
McGill (4-1-0) hosts Brock (0-1-1) at 7 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 21) at McConnell Arena. The Gryphons (1-1-1) visit Concordia (1-0-1) that evening. The Stingers defeated Brock 5-3 on Friday.

UOIT 1 York 3
The York University Lions men's hockey team extended its season-opening undefeated streak to three games on Friday night with a 3-1 victory over the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Lions are a perfect 3-0 and sit atop the OUA West standings, while their OUA East counterparts fell to 1-2 with the loss.
The Lions opened the scoring at 12:30 of the first period with a power play goal by Josh LaFrance, and they added to their lead less than five minutes later when Kyle Campbell scored his second of the season. The score sat at 2-0 after the opening 20 minutes.
The Lions wasted little time extending their lead early in the second as Stefano Pezzetta found the back of the net just five minutes into the frame to make it 3-0.
The Ridgebacks finally got on the scoreboard late in the period with Brennan Roy's tally on a power play, but that's as close as they would get.
After an even first two periods, UOIT was all over York in the third, outshooting them 14-1 in the final 20 minutes. But reigning OUA all-star and U SPORTS all-Canadian goaltender Mack Shields stood tall to keep the puck out of the net and preserve the win. He finished with 35 saves of the 36 shots he faced, while his counterpart at the other end, Tyson Teichmann, made 17 stops on 20 shots.
The Lions will look to stay perfect on the year when they return to the ice on Saturday night to take on the RMC Paladins. Puck drop is set for 7pm at Canlan Ice Sports.

RMC 0 Ryerson 7
TORONTO, Ont. – It was a triumphant evening for the Ryerson Rams men's hockey program as they upended the visiting Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins 7-0 on home ice, to extend their undefeated start to the 2017-2018 season.
As the Rams and Paladins prepared to take to the ice on Friday night, the music of the Tragically Hip rang out through the Mattamy Athletic Centre in tribute to the late Gord Downie; a fitting start to a game against a team from the Limestone City. The game that would unfold, however, started off in a way that not many present in the Mattamy really expected.
A notable lack of defense from both teams appeared to be the overriding theme of the first period. From the initial puck drop to the final whistle of the first twenty minutes of play, both teams employed a strategy of an aggressive offensive effort, combined with a large degree of physicality. For the Paladins, this pace of play was unusual, as the visiting team was able to keep pace with a Rams team that is known for its unique focus on offensive-heavy playing. This combination of playing styles resulted in a lack of defensive fortification from both teams, contributing to a large amount of shots on goal, with Ryerson acquiring seventeen and RMC thirteen. In spite of this plethora of offensive chances, neither team could place themselves on the scoreboard as they headed into their respective locker rooms for the first intermission.
"We knew that they (RMC) would come and bring a solid effort," remarked head coach Johnny Duco on the performance of the visiting Paladins during the first period, adding, "every year they find a way to upset one of the better teams so we preached this week that we didn't want to let that be us."
Coming back onto the ice for the second period of play, whatever hope the Paladins had of achieving an upset were quickly put to rest. As play resumed, RMC's style of play stood in stark contrast to what they had previously exhibited in the first period. Sloppy offensive attempts, and poor transition passes took over the Paladins front-line efforts, all mistakes that would allow the Rams to be the first on the scoreboard. At the six-minute mark of the period, Ryerson's Erick DeLaurentis (Markham, Ont.) rocketed a slapshot past the Paladins netminder, to put the Rams up 1-0 and record his first goal of the season.
Following this goal, the Rams would unleash an onslaught of offensive efforts that would place them firmly ahead. Not even two minutes had passed since DeLaurentis' goal, when teammate Marcus Hinds (Toronto, Ont.) tipped in a close-range effort to further the Rams lead to 2-0. As the period continued, Vince Figliomeni (Bolton, Ont.) and Devon Paliani (LaSalle, Ont.) would each, respectively, add in goals of their own to push the Rams lead to 4-0 heading into the second intermission.
Unfortunately for the visiting Paladins, the third period would follow a similar trend of unanswered goals from the Rams. It would be less than two minutes into the final period of the game when Matt Mistele (Whitby, Ont.) would put in his third goal of the season to extend Ryerson's lead to 5-0. Prior to the conclusion of the game, the Rams would extend their lead to 7-0 off of goals provided by Alex Basso (Toronto, Ont.) and John Carpino (Maple, Ont.) who each recorded their first goal of the season.
Tomorrow evening, the Rams will be taking on the visiting Queen's Gaels, a team that is slated to have one of the best line-ups in the league.

Ottawa 3 Windsor 2
The Lancer men's hockey team split their first pair of games at South Windsor Arena this past weekend.
Windsor dropped a 3-2 decision Friday night in their home opener before rebounding on Saturday to narrowly edge the Carleton Ravens 2-1.
As they head back on the road next week, the Lancers are 1-2-1 on the year and sit in seventh place after only two weeks into the year.
Friday vs Ottawa
After a scoreless opening period, Ottawa came out strong in the second and took a 3-0 lead with goals from Eric Locke, Kevin Domingue, and Médric Mercier before the Lancers were able to get on the board.
Brennan Feasey scored his second of the season at 14:19 of the middle frame to cut the visitor lead heading into the final period.
In the third, Windsor pulled up their socks defensively and held the Carleton offense at bay. Newcomer Ian Parker scored his first OUA career goal on the power play at 12:09 of the third, bringing the Lancers within one. Windsor drove the net for the next seven minutes but were unable to get past Ottawa goaltender Graham Hunt.
Windsor goaltender Johnathan Reinhart made 33 saves between the pipes for Windsor, while his counterpart Hunt made 26 to earn the win.

Laurier 1 Nipissing 2
Earning their first win of the season, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey team received some goals from somewhat unlikely sources.
While the team has skill throughout their lineup, two players brought in to stop the goals, ended up providing them as Nipissing skated away with a gritty 2-1 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks Friday night.
Matt Donnelly and Brody Morris – two defencemen – scored for the Lakers, erasing a 1-0 deficit and picking up the two points, improving their record to 1-1-1.
Laurier found the back of the net first, scoring just before the midway point of the first period to go up 1-0.
Despite some chances, Nipissing didn't tie the fame until the 19:37 mark of the opening period as Donnelly grabbed a loose puck, flew down the wing and hammered home a shot to the top corner, tying up the game.
After a scoreless second, the Lakers would grab the game-winner with eight minutes remaining in the third when Morris fired a puck towards the net.
After a few bounces and a scramble, the puck found its way past the goalline for the second Lakers goal of the game.
From there, the Lakers defended well and didn't allow many quality chances, preserving the victory and two points.
Both goals – Donnelly and Morris' – were their first career OUA tallies.
Brent Moran was very good in net, making 24 saves for his first OUA win.
Nipissing held a 29-25 advantage on the shotclock through 60 minutes.
Looking for their second win, the Lakers are back on the ice Saturday night as they host the Waterloo Warriors.
Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at Memorial Gardens.

Waterloo 6 Laurentian 3
The Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team debuted their new gold uniform kit on Friday night in Sudbury. But for as good as they looked in the mirror, they looked even better on the ice.
The Warriors used a four-goal outburst in the first period and 31 saves for Mike Morrison (Hamilton/) to earn a 6-3 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs in their first road game of 2017-18.
Daniel Perigo (Truro/) scored twice for the Warriors, while Joey Champigny (East Angus/) added a goal and an assist and Michael Siddall (St. Mary's/) chipped in with a pair of helpers. Waterloo also got goals from Cole Murphy (Cole Harbour/), Ryan Hanes (Kanata/) and Mitch Elliot (Prince George/), pushing their record to 2-1-0 on the young season.
Meanwhile, the Voyageurs' third-period comeback attempt came up short, as the hosts fought back from two four-goal deficits to cut the Waterloo lead to 5-3 late in the game. Richard Therrien, Blake Forslund, and Caleb Apperson scored for Laurentian, while Joel Vienneau took the loss in goal, allowing three goals on 30 shots in relief of Gunner Rivers.
The Voyageurs carried the play in the game's opening moments, but momentum shifted drastically once Hanes' wrister from the blue line found its way through to give Waterloo the early lead. The goal snapped a 109-game scoring drought for the stay-at-home fifth-year defenceman, who currently has an ironman streak of 113 consecutive games played for the black and gold.
Hanes' goal ignited Waterloo's offense, as the visitors would use it as the catalyst for a four-goal outburst over the next 8 minutes and 30 seconds. First, just 57 seconds after the Hanes marker, it was Champigny who cut in over the line and let a wicked wrister go that beat Rivers to the glove side, doubling the Warriors lead and chasing Rivers from the Laurentian net.
Then, off an offensive zone faceoff, forward-turned-defenceman Elliot scored on a seeing-eye shot from the point to make it 3-0. Then, with under three minutes to play in the opening frame, Murphy went bar-down to stake the Warriors to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.
The Voyageurs were a different club in the second period, outshooting the Warriors 15-8. But other than Therrien's goal on a four-on-four sequence, Morrison was up to the task – the veteran Warriors netminder frustrated Laurentian shooters at every turn, maintaining a 4-1 Waterloo advantage heading into the final stanza.
In the third, Perigo extended the lead to 5-1 on a nifty odd-man rush with Mitchell Smith (Plainfield/). The Voyageurs' Forsland responded with a tip-in 28 seconds later, and Apperson drew the Vees to within two goals with a power-play marker at 14:53, but that's as close as the hosts would get. With Vienneau pulled for the extra attacker, Morrison and the Warriors' defensive zone play kept Laurentian at bay long enough for Perigo to score into the empty net, salting away a victory for Waterloo.
The Warriors will now look to claim the second half of their early season northern road trip, as they face the Nipissing Lakers on Saturday, October 21. Puck drop from North Bay is slated for 7:30pm, and the game will be available live on oua.tv.

UQTR 4 Lakehead 1
The Lakehead Thunderwolves found themselves in an early hole that they were unable to climb out of and fell 4-1 to the UQTR Patriotes in front of a crowd of 1,746 at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday night.
Jason Lavellee put UQTR on the board just 4:31 into the game when he converted on a breakaway chance by deking Lakehead goalie Nic Renyard and backhanding the puck to the top shelf.
Raphael Maheux scored for the Patriotes on a delayed penalty call at 9:17 and then Mathieu Lemay added a power play marker at 16:51 after a point shot made its way through traffic to find the back of the net, giving UQTR a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Thunderwolves came out much stronger in the second and Scott Gall got the lone goal for Lakehead midway through the period when he finished off a mad scramble in front of UQTR goalie Alexandre Belanger. Dillon Donnelly and Dylan Butler were credited with the assists.
Lakehead started the third period with a 5-on-3 power play for a minute-and-a-half, but Belanger held the Wolves at bay.
Renyard was tested by the Patriotes on several occasions in the final frame but was also very sharp at the other end of the ice.
Lakehead pulled Renyard for an extra attacker in the waning moments of the game, but Devin St. Hilaire scored an empty-netter with 51 seconds remaining to ice the game for the Patriotes.
On the night, Lakehead was 0-for-7 on the power play, while UQTR went 1-for-3.
Total shots on goal in the game were 34-32 in favor of the Patriotes.
The Molson Three Stars of the Game were:
1. Alexandre Belanger, UQTR
2. Nic Renyard, Lakehead
3. Scott Gall, Lakehead
The loss drops Lakehead's OUA record to 0-3-1 (2-5-1 overall). The Wolves will look to get into the win column when they hit the road for a pair of games against the Waterloo Warriors next weekend.

RMC 1 York 4
Colton Vannucci scored a pair of goals to lead the York University Lions men's hockey team to a 4-1 victory over the RMC Paladins in their Saturday-night affair at Canlan Ice Sports.
The fourth-year forward netted the first two goals of the game, the opening tally at 12:47 of the first period and the next at 6:22 of the second. His two goals were the only two tallies of the opening 40 minutes of play.
Morgan Messenger earned an assist on each goal, while Jack Goranson and Nick Zottl were also credited with assists on the goals.
The Paladins finally got on the board at 4:20 of the third period on a power play goal by Bruce Hornbrook to cut their deficit to 2-1, and they were back on the power play again 90 seconds later. This time, however, it was the Lions who got on the scoreboard with a short-handed goal by Scott Feser that restored the Lions' two-goal lead.
The score would remain that way until late in the frame, when Kyle Campbell fired the puck into an empty net to round out the scoring.
Alex Fotinos got the start in net and was impressive, turning aside 26 of the 27 shots he faced. His RMC counterpart, Daniel Vautour, stopped 31 shots and allowed three goals.
The Lions remain perfect on the season with a 4-0 record and are now the only undefeated team in the OUA. They will travel downtown on Friday night to face the Toronto Varsity Blues in a game beginning at 7pm, and they will then return home on Saturday night for a huge match-up against the Ryerson Rams, last year's OUA West Division champs.

UOIT 3 Toronto 2
TORONTO, Ont. – Goals by Josh Maguire (Cobourg, Ont.), Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) and Danny Elser(Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) in the third period put the UOIT men's hockey team back at .500 on the season and gave the team a 3-2 victory in Toronto.
Up against the Toronto Varsity Blues, the Ridgebacks found themselves down 1-0 after one at Varsity Arena in Toronto. After killing off a Maguire penalty, the Ridgebacks first of the game, Luca Leone took advantage for the Varsity Blue with 1:14 remaining before the intermission – despite UOIT leading 9-7 in shots.
Again, in the second, the Varsity Blues offence got things going around a power play, this time converting before Spencer Roberts (Stouffville, Ont.) was left the box. Aidan Wallace was the goal scorer for Toronto this time, notching his first of the season at the 9:12 mark. In the second period the teams were even with seven shots aside.
In a game that saw only 10 penalty minutes between two teams, UOIT went on the penalty kill early in the third after Elser was called for slashing. Fortunately for the Ridgebacks, Maguire scored his first OUA goal shorthanded just 3:14 into the final period.
With only their second power play of the game, UOIT's special teams came alive against as Robinson scored his second of the year, with assists to Brennan Roy (Iroquois Falls, Ont.) and Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.). Roy's assist was his team-leading sixth point.
Just 27 seconds later Ridgebacks' captain, Elser, scored his first of the season with assists to Robinson and Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.). His goal stood at the game winner as the Ridgebacks found a way to split their weekend on the road.
Tyson Teichmann (Belleville, Ont.) made 17 saves in the win, while Frederic Foulem made 24 in the loss.

Ottawa 3 Western 7
LONDON, Ont. – Goals from six different players led the Western Mustangs to a 7-3 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Saturday night at Thompson Arena.
Saturday's contest was a special one, as not only was it Homecoming on the Western campus, but Mustangs held a special pre-game ceremony to honour the late Chris McCauley. An emotional banner raising and ceremony to retire his jersey recognized his extraordinary career as a Mustang and beyond.
McCauley is the first ever Western hockey player to be honoured with a banner, and no Mustang from this point forward will wear his number five jersey. McCauley passed away from ALS earlier this year and was an advocate for ALS research. Donations to ALS research at Western can be made at https://secure2.convio.net/uwo/donate.html.
Trevor Warnaar led the Mustangs scoring efforts on Saturday with two goals in the win, with Chris Corbeil, Kolten Olynek, Steven Beyers, Rylan Bechtel, and Cody Brown each scoring a goal as well. A trio of players provided the offence for Ottawa, with Eric Locke, Connor Sills, and Marco Azzano each tallying a goal in the loss.
Despite a strong start by the Mustangs that saw them generate two good early scoring chances it was the Gee-Gees that were first on the board as Locke scored on a slap shot to take advantage of Ottawa's first power play opportunity of the night. Locke's marker at 9:22 of the first stood as the only goal of the period with the Gee-Gees heading into the intermission up 1-0.
Western came out strong in the second, with Warnaar scoring on the Mustangs second shot of the period to even the score at 1-1 just 27 seconds into the frame.
Corbeil scored nine minutes in to take the lead, finishing off some nice teamwork between him, captain #Jonathan Laser, and Olynek.
Unfazed, the Gee-gees tied the score up with a little over five minutes left in the period with Connor Sills managing to squeeze the puck past Dan Davies. Two minutes later, the Gee-Gees' Marco Azzano, with help from teammates Mathieu Newcomb and Michael Poirier, charged down the ice, to net a short-handed goal.
Western did not let Ottawa keep the lead for long, however, scoring 20 seconds later, with only seconds left of their power play. Olynek got his first OUA goal off a pass from teammate Mitchell Brooks, to tie things up after 40 minutes.
Just as they had in the second, the Mustangs got out to a strong start in the final frame, scoring a little under five minutes in to take a 4-3 lead. Warnaar proided the go-ahead goal as he snagged the puck, airborne after bouncing off goalie Anthony Brodeur, and fired it over the line to put the Mustangs in front. Less than a minute later, Beyers had a clear path to the net, and took his time to go in on Brodeur and score the second goal of the period.
Ottawa pressed the attack after that, with Davies providing a solid presence in the Mustangs net on his way to a 45-save performance.
Bechtel provided another insurance marker with less than five minutes remaining before Brown iced it with an empty net goal at 18:25 to give the Mustangs a 7-3 win.
Coach Singer noted that "It was a real hard battle…Coming out with two points was very important…Lots to build on obviously after tonight's effort."
The Mustangs will look to build on their momentum on next week when they head back on the road to face the Guelph Gryphons on Thursday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m. Fans can catch all the action live on OUA.tv

Guelph 2 Concordia 4
MONTREAL, Que. - Rookie Todd Winder capped a memorable weekend in Montreal by scoring two goals on Saturday night at Concordia. Unfortunately for Winder and the rest of the Gryphons men's hockey team, it came in a losing effort as the Gryphs were on the wrong end of a 4-2 score against the Concordia Stingers. With the game tied at 2-2 and just over four minutes remaining in the 2nd period, the Stingers scored the go-ahead goal with a power play marker from Alexis Pepin. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 1-3-1 on the season while the Stingers improve to 3-0-1.
After scoring his first goal as a Gryphon on Friday night against McGill, Winder, who is the cousin of Gryphons captain Scott Simmonds, would add to his account on Saturday night with a pair of goals against the Stingers. After scoring a short-handed goal midway through the 1st period to tie the game at 1-1, Winder was at it again in the 2nd with his 3rd goal of the weekend. The Uxbridge, Ontario native is now in his rookie year at U of G after coming off of a sensational 2016-17 campaign in the OJHL (Ontario Junior A Hockey League) where he was the leading scorer for the Newmarket Hurricanes, scoring 25 goals while also tallying 35 assists.
Fellow Gryphon rookie Jason Da Silva made the first regular season start of his Gryphon career, turning away 35 of the 39 shots sent his way. Two of Concordia's four goals on the night came on the power play as the Gryphons were whistled for 10 infractions on the night with the Stingers going 2-for-10 on the power play.
The Gryphons will now return home for a Thursday night (Oct. 26) game versus Western and will play five of their next six games at the Gryphon Centre.

On Saturday night in North Bay, rookie goaltender Trevor Martin (Ardrossan/) was spectacular in what was his first career USports start. And with the help of some timely offense from some fellow freshmen, it also turned out to be his first career USports victory.
Martin turned aside 34 shots, and the Warriors got third-period goals from rookies Lee Dower (Conception Bay/) and Keigan Goetz (New Hamburg/) to skate past the Nipissing Lakers 4-2 for their third win in four games to start the 2017-18 season.
Phillip Fife (Oromocto/) and Cam Nicoll (Loretto/) also scored for the Warriors, while captain Mike Moffat (Waterloo/)added two assists. Meanwhile, the Lakers saw their record fall to 1-2-1, despite getting shorthanded goals from Danny Desrochers and Joel Herbert. Domenic Graham made 32 stops in a losing cause for the hosts.
The Lakers earned momentum off the opening faceoff, but Martin's play held the game scoreless until Fife broke through for the Warriors on a man advantage to give Waterloo a 1-0 lead. Nipissing pushed hard right away to find the equalizer, but more Martin heroics ensured the Warriors an advantage heading into the first intermission.
Waterloo came on harder in the middle fame, forcing the Lakers into some minor penalty problems. But it was Nipissing who scored the period's only goal, as Desrochers made a great shorthanded play to spin and fire over Martin's left shoulder, equalizing the score at 1-1 after two periods.
And early in the third, the Lakers struck again while short a man. After killing off the first portion of a Waterloo five-on-three advantage, Herbert converted on a shorthanded breakaway to take a 2-1 lead. But just when it looked like Nipissing would spoil Martin's debut, the Warriors responded with a big closing push.
First, it was Dower who took a Zac Coulter (Owen Sound/) drop pass and ripped a shot through traffic that beat Graham to the blocker side, squaring the score at 2-2. Then, with under eight minutes to play, Goetz was credited with the eventual game-winning goal, putting Waterloo up 3-2. Nicoll would score into the empty net to salt away a perfect 2-0 road trip for the Warriors in Northern Ontario this weekend.
The Warriors will now return to Waterloo for their annual weekend visit from the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Puck drop at the Columbia Icefield Arena is slated for 7pm on Friday, October 27 and 4pm on Saturday, October 28.

Carleton 1 Windsor 2
The Lancer men's hockey team split their first pair of games at South Windsor Arena this past weekend.
Windsor dropped a 3-2 decision Friday night in their home opener before rebounding on Saturday to narrowly edge the Carleton Ravens 2-1.
As they head back on the road next week, the Lancers are 1-2-1 on the year and sit in seventh place after only two weeks into the year.
Parker continued his strong weekend on Saturday contributing on both of Windsor's goals. Late in the first period, the Florence, Kentucky native scored his second goal of the weekend, and OUA career, at 16:56 to give Windsor a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The score remained the same until 6:52 of the third period when Carleton leading scorer Dalen Hedges fired the puck past Lancer goaltender Blake Richard to tie it at one.
With 52 seconds left in regulation, Windsor got caught with two many men on the ice to put the Ravens on the power play. Parker worked the puck away from the Ravens in the dying seconds and fired it off to Chris Scott, who, on a partial breakaway, went deep into the left corner and fired it into the net past Justin Nichols for the win.

Laurier 5 Laurentian 3
SUDBURY, Ont. (October 22, 2017) - On Saturday night, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team earned their third win of the season, defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs 5-3.
The Voyageurs opened the scoring at 12:47 in the first period, courtesy of Richard Therrien (Hearst, Ont.) on assists by Xavier Couture (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.) and Nicolas Dionne (Amos, Que.).
The Hawks found the equalizer 47 seconds into the second period as Lucas Batt (Lewisporte, Nfld.) scored his first of the season. The second period scoring continued at the 5:58 mark when Jeremy Pullara (Vaughn, Ont.) set up Brandon Robinson (Newmarket, Ont.) who found the back of net. Just before the end of the period, the Hawks added another goal thanks to Anthony Conti (North Vancouver, B.C.), off an assist from Will Cook (Port Stanley, Ont.).
Laurier extended their lead to 4-1 at 3:26 in the third period as Mitch Wright (Chesley, Ont.) and Batt connected for the second time in the contest.
Laurentian countered with Blake Forslund (Owen Sound, Ont.) scoring at 9:55 to make it 4-2.
However, the Hawks had an answer in the form of an empty netter which Pullara, off assists from Christian Mroczkowski (Kitchener, Ont.) and Kyle Jenkins (Brampton, Ont.), finished off.
Therrien scored his second of the game right after Pullara's goal but it was too little too late for the Voyageurs to mount a comeback.
Shot totals were 43 for the Golden Hawks and 24 for the Voyageurs.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 3-1-0 on the season while the Voyageurs fall to 1-3-0.
From here, the Hawks play Ryerson next at Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. Puck-drop is set for Wednesday night.
