OUA ANNOUNCES 2008 GOLF ALL-STARS AND COACH OF THE YEAR
The OUA First Team All-Stars and the individual champions of the OUA Golf Championship are presented by mikeweir.com.
With his first place finish at the 2008 OUA Golf Championship, freshman Humphrey Yeung (Markham, Ont.) of the Carleton Ravens is named a First Team All-Star. He shot a two-round score of 148, four strokes over par to win the Len Shore Trophy. He is joined by silver medalist Patrick Forbes (Toronto, Ont.) of the Queen's Gaels who finished one shot behind Yeung at the Crosswinds Golf & Country Club in Burlington, Ont. Forbes won three OUA tournaments this season, including the Queen's, Western and Waterloo Invitationals. He is a four-time OUA All-Star.
Adrian Cord (Toronto, Ont.) and Mark Bania (Kitchener, Ont.), members of the OUA champion Toronto Varsity Blues team, are also 2008 First Team All-Stars. Cord finished in a tie for third at the OUA Golf Championship, shooting a two-day total of 150. The pair tied Forbes for first place at the Western Invitational. Bania was a member of the Second Team All-Stars in 2007.
The final member of the First Team All-Stars is Charles Fizsimmons (Toronto, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs. He is the only golfer to shoot a round under 70 this season, posting a 68 at the Guelph Invitational. Fizsimmons was forced to withdrawal from the OUA Golf Championship after suffering an ankle injury. He was a member of the Second Team All-Stars last year.
The Laurentian Voyageurs pairing of Matt Bortolotto (Sudbury, Ont.) and John Atherton (Toronto, Ont.) highlight the Second Team All-Stars of 2008. Atherton finished in a tie for third place at the OUA Golf Championship, while Bortolotto was the winner of the Laurier Invitational. Atherton was a Second Team All-Star in 2006.
Rounding out the 2008 Second Team All-Stars are Garrett Rank (Elmira, Ont.) of the Waterloo Warriors, Wesley Ladouceur (Belle River, Ont.) of the Windsor Lancers, Jason Wellings (Dundas, Ont.) of the McMaster Marauders and Johnny Hall (Langton, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs.
The women's All-Star teams have a definite Western flair, as six members of the four-time OUA champion Mustangs are First or Second Team members. Lisa Boyko (Mississauga, Ont.) and Caitlin Jennings (West Vancouver, Ont.) are First Team members, while Stephanie Grenier (Sherbrooke, Que.), Cheryl Beech (Forest, Ont.), Jennifer Mound (Unionville, Ont.) and Hilary Bennett (Fenlon Falls, Ont.) make up the majority of the Second Team. Beech and Jennings won the Western and Laurier tournaments respectively.
Danielle Greene (Gananoque, Ont.), the three-time OUA women's champion, is a First Team All-Star for the fourth time. She shot a two-round total of 150. Tiffany Terrier (Toronto, Ont.) of the Waterloo Warriors is the other member of the First Team for the third time. She was runner-up at the OUA Golf Championship. Waterloo teammate Katelyn Inlow (Calgary, Alta.) rounds out the Second Team.
The 2008 OUA Men's Coach of the Year is Michael Belanger of the Laurier Golden Hawks, while Carla Munch of the Waterloo Warriors is the Coach of the Year on the women's side. Both are first time winners of their respective awards.
