TORONTO AND RMC CROWNED OUA FENCING CHAMPIONS
The Toronto Varsity Blues men's fencing team captured the 2005 OUA men's fencing championship at Brock University this weekend re-claiming the Charles Walters Team Trophy from the Queen's Golden Gaels. In women's competition, the RMC Paladins captured the Kay Aoyama women's championship team trophy for the first time in fourteen years defeating the four-time reigning champion Golden Gaels.
Toronto won the team trophy finishing first overall in both the men's foil and men's sabre competition while Western captured the overall epee title. Varsity Blue Nicholas Rudzik won the Desjarlais Trophy in epee competition over Carleton's Pat Snider. In the foil event, RMC's Alex Prymack defeated Western's Steve Berkes, while Carleton's Manu Mukerji captured the Schwende-Tully Trophy over Queen's Jan Sterniczukin sabre competition .
On the women's side, RMC defeated the four-time defending champion Queen's Golden Gaels to capture the team trophy finishing first overall in both the foil and sabre events. In foil, RMC's Marilyne Lafortune defeated Toronto's Claire Midgley in the final to capture the Maître Ken Wood trophy while Margo Sloan from McMaster took home the bronze medal. In epee competition, Queen's captured their sixth straight epee title sweeping the podium with Laura Redman winning the Dr. Al English trophy while teammate Krissi Baxter captured the silver medal and Joanne Ko the bronze. The Fred Wach trophy was won by Carleton's Miheala Jekic in the sabre event over Louise Dignum from Queen's.
Miheala Jekic from Carleton was honoured with the Dave O'Donnell trophy for sportswomanship while Queen's Jan Sterniczuk was awarded the George Tully trophy for sportmanship. Carleton's Eli Sukunda who has been with the team for over a decade was named Coach of the Year.
