QUEENS LOOKS TO REPEAT AT OUA FENCING CHAMPIONSHIP
ST. CATHERINES, ON - The Queen's University Golden Gaels will look to capture their second straight double gold win at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Fencing Championship this weekend. The Kingston school claimed both the men's and women's titles last year and will look to do the same at Brock University.
For the women's team at Queen's, a fifth straight OUA banner is on the line. Led by Laura Redman, 2003-04 epee champion, the Gaels will have a strong showing in this weapon. At the OUA East Sectional held at Trent University in early February, four of the eight qualifiers for the event came from Queen's, including Redmen, who won the event. They will face stiff competition from cross-town rivals, the Royal Military College Paladins, who secured the remaining four qualifying spots from the East, including Sara Mcrea's second place finish and Jeni Hoover's third place finish.
RMC and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues will be the Gaels biggest competition on the women's side. RMC captured the foil event at the East Sectional, despite Trent's Tamar Walsh finishing first. At the West Sectional held at McMaster University, Toronto claimed all three weapons in the team standings. A Varsity Blue took home individual honours in each event, with Claire Midgely taking the foil, Megan Stone, the epee, and sabre winner Catherine Migliore.
In the men's division, Queen's will have to withstand a charge from Carleton University Ravens and The University of Western Ontario Mustangs. The Ravens managed to secure the epee team event at Trent, but Nithum Thain of Queen's took home individual honours. The Gaels also found success with the foil and sabre, claiming first place in team standings. Zack Williams claimed individual honours in the foil, despite fencers from RMC taking three of the top six spots. In the sabre, Jan Sterniczuk and Martin Busse, both from Queen's, finished first and second. Western claimed two of the three weapons at the West Sectional. Dave Collins and Steve Berkes finished first and second respectively, at the foil, while Ryan Michell won the epee event. Toronto dominated the saber, with Sandeep Kembhaui and Thomas Nguyen claiming the top two spots, and thus the team win.
Action starts Saturday and continues Sunday at Brock in St. Catharines.
