Carleton's Sinclair named CIS Female Athlete of the Week
Sinclair, who hails from Manotick, Ont., helped the Ravens capture gold at the CIS-CCA championships in Regina thanks to a 9-4 upset win in the final over the University of Alberta squad of skip Kelsey Rocque, who was crowned junior world champion earlier this month in Switzerland. Sinclair, who curled 70 per cent in the round-robin to place third among skips, guided her team to a 5-2 record in the preliminary round and qualified for the title match with a 6-4 semifinal victory against Wilfrid Laurier. Thanks to its triumph, Carleton will represent Canada at the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain.
Rocque was also nominated for the women’s award.
Hulak, a fourth-year business student from Saskatoon, was named tournament MVP at the PotashCorp University Cup presented by Co-op, in his hometown. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound forward led all players at the championship in goals (4) and points (6) and had the Huskies’ lone marker in the gold-medal final, a 3-1 loss to archrival Alberta in front of 6,289 fans at the Credit Union Centre. In pool play, the Canada West player of the year had two points, including the game-winner with two minutes left in regulation, in a 3-2 victory over AUS champion Acadia, and added two goals and an assist in a 9-0 rout of OUA titlist Windsor.
McGill hockey player Jacob Gervais-Chouinard and Wilfrid Laurier curler Aaron Squires were the other male nominees.
