Laurier curling still undefeated after day two
Skip Carly Howard led the Golden Hawks to two victories over the Trent Excalibur and Algoma Thunderbirds in the final two draws of the day. Laurier currently holds first-place in Pool B heading into Day 3 of competition, one win ahead of the Carleton Ravens (2-0), who have a game in-hand on the Hawks and are also undefeated.
The defending OUA banner-winners from Western earned a 10-1 triumph over the host Windsor Lancers in their lone match on Friday, improving to 2-1 and holding down sole possession of third in Pool B.
The competition on the other side of the women's bracket is heating up, as four teams currently share the top of the leader board in Pool A. After going undefeated on the first day of the championships, Guelph, Laurentian and Waterloo all suffered their first losses of the week on Friday. Jaimee Gardner and the 2013 bronze-medallists from Guelph used an explosive second half of their first game of the day to bring a halt to Laurentian's perfect record.
However, the Gryphons ran into a Waterloo squad coming off a 7-6 loss to Toronto where they gave up three points in the final two ends of play. The Warriors responded by making a formidable comeback from a 6-0 deficit against Guelph. Waterloo notched three in the fourth and then proceeded to steal one point in each of the final four ends to grab the win.
The Varsity Blues, led by Danielle Bourque, ended Day 2 with a 6-2 win over Queen's, creating a logjam at the top of Pool A.
On the men's side, the defending national champions from Waterloo had their perfect record threatened by the upstart UOIT Ridgebacks and skip Ben Bevan. The Ridgebacks twice mounted comebacks, and evened the game at 7-7 heading into the final end. However, the experienced squad from Waterloo and skip Jake Walker had the hammer in the eighth, and scored a single to move to 3-0 and the top of Pool A.
Lakehead and Guelph both grabbed a couple of wins on Friday after splitting their matches on the opening day of competition, and are currently tied for second-place in Pool A.
The Golden Hawks are also 3-0 after earning two wins over Windsor and Algoma during Friday's draws, and are the only undefeated rink in Pool B.
The Carleton Ravens, guided by skip Brett Lyon-Hatcher, rebounded from a loss to Toronto to defeat Algoma 9-4, and are tied with the Varsity Blues for second in the pool. Toronto, skipped by Evan Lilly, notched two important wins on Friday, topping the Ravens 6-2 before earning two points in the final end with the hammer to beat Western 7-6. Both Toronto and Carleton hold 2-1 records.
