MAC NEARLY UPSETS YORK
McMaster nearly pulled off an upset victory over the York Lions, falling just short in the fifth and deciding set (25-17, 21-25, 25-21, 25-27, 15-7). Leading scorer for the Lions was Elizabeth Salas-Chavez with 19 kills and 13 digs while teammate Judith Thompson had 11 kills and 28 digs in the victory. Courtney Irving and Antonia Stathakos also helped the team pull out a victory playing strong defensively with 28 and 24 digs a piece. The Marauders were led by third year player Mieka Jackson who had 13 kills and 10 digs but they fell just short of handing York their first loss of the season loosing in the final set 15-7.
Toronto 3, Laurier 1
In the match up between two of the leagues top teams, the Varsity Blues defeated the Golden Hawks in a close four set game (25-23, 15-25, 25-20, 25-18). Second year player, Mila Miguel, led Toronto in scoring with 12 kills and 9 digs while fellow Blues player Melinda Lee played strong defensively for the team collecting 7 kills and 19 digs in the victory. Kaitlin Sauder was the bright spot for the Golden Hawks as she had 12 kills and 16 digs in the game. With the win, Toronto improved to 8-3 on the season while Laurier remained on top of the west division dropping to a 9-2 record.
Ottawa 3, Queen's 0
Ottawa defeated Queen's in a close three-set match on Saturday afternoon (25-21, 26-24, 25-21). Christine Lamey was the Gee-Gees leading scorer with 13 kills, 15 digs, and 3 blocked shots while teammates Melissa Maddocks and Manon Ouellette helped the team defensively with 17 digs a piece. Lead scorer for the Gaels was Amanda Digel who had 17 kills, 11 digs, and one blocked shot. With the win Ottawa improved to 6-3 on the season while Queen's sits just below them in the East Division in fourth place with a 4-6 record.
