OUA Women's Rugby Roundup September 9-10
Sept 10
Toronto 41, Waterloo 0
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's rugby team picked up their first win of the season in a dominating 41-0 shutout performance versus the Waterloo Warriors Saturday night (Sept. 9) at Varsity Stadium.
This marks the first shutout victory for the Blues since 2009 when they defeated the York Lions 12-0, and the first win over Waterloo since 2011 when they dropped the Warriors in a tight matchup 34-29. U of T controlled possession throughout a majority of the 80 minute contest, applying offensive pressure that saw four different Blues record tries, while also stifling the Warriors attack with strong physical defence
Third-year sensation Jordyn Orlando opened the scoring for the Blues in the fourth minute with an incredible zig-zagging run through the Warriors defence for a quick try.
Second-year wing Khadi Dako followed that up with her first of three tries just five minutes later as her speed was unmatched on the night.
2016 OUA all-star Lauren Van Dyke extended the Blues lead in the 25th minute with a strong drive for a try, followed by Dako's second of the night just before half to make it a 24-0 lead at the break.
The Varsity Blues didn't let up with Van Dyke and Dako both adding to U of T's lead to open the second half.
Toronto's scoring was rounded out by second-year Toronto native Robyn Feraday who powered her way into the endzone in the 73rd minute.
Second-year prop Monika Hirsch scored three conversions for the Blues on the night.
The Blue and White return to the pitch next on Saturday, September 23 when they will travel to challenge the Trent Excalibur. Kick off is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Peterborough, Ont.

Queen's 57, Western 12
KINGSTON, Ont. (September 9, 2017) - The Queen's Gaels (1-1) hosted the Western Mustangs (0-1) in the 2017 home opener on Saturday afternoon at Nixon Field. After being tied early at 12-12, the Gaels exploded offensively taking a 57-12 victory.
The Gaels and Mustangs were close to start out with Queen's picking up early tries from Sophie de Goede (Victoria) and Nadia Popov (Newmarket, Ont.) and tacking on a successful conversion from de Goede to put Queen's up 12-0 through 17 minutes. The Mustangs fought right back as Dubissette-Borrce and Wallsten each picked up tries while Western converted successfully on one attempt, tying the match up at 12-12.
From there on it was all Gaels. Just three minutes later de Goede picked up her second try of the match as she punched in a two-metre run. The Gaels two-sport rookie then picked up a successful conversion to make the lead 19-12 Queen's. Pippi McKay (Toronto) and Molly Labenski (Oakville, Ont.) added two more tries before the half as Queen's was in control through 40 minutes with a 31-12 lead.
Labenski picked up her second try of the match to kick-off the second 40 minutes and Erin Geddes (Lindsay, Ont.), Sadie Stephenson (Oakville, Ont.) and McKinley Hunt (King City, Ont.) all added tries in the second half. Queen's finished off with a 57-12 victory over the Mustangs.
"We came out with the intention of weathering the storm through the first 20 to 25 minutes, knowing that if we were able to do that our depth would allow us to pull away eventually. I was very happy with the 80 minutes that we were able to put in and although we didn't put as many on in the second half as we would have liked the opportunities were there." - Head coach Dan Valley
Queen's will be back on the road as they visit the York Lions on Friday night at 7 pm. The Gaels will then return home on September 23 to take on the McMaster Marauders.

Guelph 76, York 10
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons women's rugby team played like a team hungry for another title. The defending OUA champion Gryphons used the balance they are known for in a decisive 76-10 win over the York Lions in Toronto Friday night.
Guelph showed its power and speed in jumping out to a 33-0 lead. The Gryphons were up 45-10 at the half, before turning it on the second with another 31 points. Fourth-year centre Madison Brattan was an offensive focal point, scoring a match-high three tries, while fifth-year scrum half Chloe Runge and third-year flanker Megan Acheson had two each.
Jasmine Ing, a rookie centre from Stoney Creek, ON, was good on six conversions.
"York has some very good athletes but they couldn't contain our strong running attack," said coach Colette McAuley. "We showed balance with several forwards and backs driving over the line for tries."
McAuley said that Runge was instrumental in directing both the attack and the defence, while Brattan was able to slice through the line on most ball carries, which put the Lions' defence under constant pressure.
Fourth-year 8-man Kylie Shaughnessy scored Guelph's first try of the match at 8:40 of the first half and the Gryphons didn't look back, improving to 2-0 on the season.
"There were several standout rookie performances," said McAuley, referring to Adea Elliott and Shaughnessy, two of the four first-year players that saw time on the pitch. "Kylie was tremendous again defending and stopping the Lions' attack around the breakdown."
They are back in action Saturday, Sept. 23 when they host the Western Mustangs at Varsity Field. The match gets underway at 12 pm.
