Lakers' run continues with 1-0 win over Windsor
Here's a fun fact to think about – the Nipissing Lakers women's hockey team is 5-0-1 in their past six games and have surrendered a grand total of four goals - yes, just four.
For the second straight game, the Lakers earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory, this time over the Windsor Lancers.
Lexi Debol scored the lone goal of the game, as she took a nice feed from Kayla Carter, broke in down the right win, fought off a defender and roofed the shot over the glove of the Lancers goaltender.
The goal came after 45 minutes of shutout hockey by both teams.
Jackie Rochefort was perfect again, for the fourth game this season, making 19 saves.
She has back-to-back shutouts and has only given up eight goals all season in eight games and has a ridiculously high save percentage of .961.
Her goals against average is just as impressive as her save percentage, as she sits with an even 1.00 GAA. Her record is 4-2-1
The third year goalie is on pace to beat last year's impressive stats.
Sitting with a 5-2-2 record, Nipissing now sits in second place, one point behind Queens and one point up on Toronto, although each team has played a different number of games.
During the Lakers almost impossible run, they have one loss – which came in overtime – five wins, have scored 12 goals and given up just four, with three of those coming in one game, as the top ranked Gaels edged Nipissing in extra time.
Nipissing will have next weekend off, as they don't hit the ice for game action again until Nov. 14 when they travel down the highway to face the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Gryphons dominate with 5-0 win vs UOIT
Guelph, ON: The Guelph Gryphons exploded to a 5-0 win over the UOIT Ridgebacks in women's hockey Saturday afternoon.
Second-year goalie Valerie Lamenta (Montréal, QC), earned her third shutout of the 2015-16 campaign, and centre Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, ON) scored the game winner as the Gryphons improved to 5-2 on the season.
It took less than four minutes into the game for Gryphons fifth-year Pinkerton to bury her third goal of the season on a backhander from a tough angle. Her right winger, fourth-year Christine Grant (Mississauga, ON), had a shot from near the goal line Ridgebacks third-year goalie Tori Campbell's (Lethbridge, AB) left, and the puck rebounded right to Pinkerton's stick on the far side of the net. Grant's assist on the play continued her point-per-game scoring pace, with six assists over her six games played.
Just over 11 minutes into the first period, rookie Ashlee Lawrence (Owen Sound, ON) scored her first goal as a Gryphon on a breakaway to make it 2-0. The Ridgebacks' leading scorer, second-year right winger Chelsea Ball (Maple, ON), turned the puck over in the neutral zone to Lawrence, who staved off the Ridgebacks' backcheck and beat Campbell over the blocker.
Twenty-seven seconds later, and just as Lawrence's goal was being announced, fourth-year right winger Averi Nooren (Aylmer, ON) broke in alone and went low on Campbell's glove side for her third tally of the year. Nooren and Pinkerton are now tied for the team lead in goals.
Leading 3-0 after the first period, Guelph didn't get complacent, but kept applying pressure, peppering Campbell with 31 shots. The Gryphons tallied a goal in both the second and third, with third-year left winger Brittany St. James (Orono, ON) and second-year right winger Sophie Contant (Cornwall, ON) finding the twine, in Guelph's largest margin of victory so far this season.
Both Nooren and St. James recorded a goal and an assist for Guelph. Their line, along with third-year centre Kelly Gribbons (Port Elgin, ON), combined for five points after being held scoreless last weekend against Brock, despite putting an abundance of shots toward the Badgers net.
Lamenta, who's been something of a revelation in net during her second season, led Guelph to its third-consecutive victory as she turned aside all 19 Ridgebacks shots. Lamenta now ranks first in the CIS with a minute 0.40 goals-against average and is tied for first with a .984 save percentage . As the shutout would suggest, she was solid throughout the game. Lamenta didn't make anything look hard, as she was great positionally. It seemed every chance the Ridgebacks had wound up right into the crest of her sweater.
It'll be interesting to see who Guelph turns to in net tomorrow afternoon as they host Queen's. Lamenta's backstopped the Gryphons throughout their current three-game win streak, and has supplanted fifth-year goalie Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, ON) as the starter. Nehring was a scratch in the UOIT game, which could possibly be to rest her for the game against Queen's Sunday. But Lamenta fared well in back-to-backs last weekend, and didn't have to exert herself too much this afternoon.
It's a 2:00pm start Sunday against the OUA's second-place Queen's Gaels at the Gryphon Centre Arena. With Queen's riding a four-game winning streak, and ranked first in team defence (just ahead of Guelph, with 0.70 and 0.90 goals against averages, respectively), it should be a great matchup.

St Catharines Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team captured their third win of the season as they shutout the York Lions by the score of 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The Badgers opened the scoring 2:14 into the first period as Cara Sayles (Welland, Ont.) beat York starting goaltender Eva Hall for her first goal of the season.
Brock took a two goal lead 1:37 into the third period, as Laura Neu (Ayr, Ont.) set up Bronwyn O'Neill (Erinsville, Ont.) for her first goal of the season. With just under five minutes left and regulation, O'Neill recorded her second goal of the game and second on the year, sliding it past Hall for the 3-0 lead.
In goal, Stephanie Loukes (Oakville, Ont.) turned aside all 27 shots she faced for the shutout victory. Hall added 15 saves in the loss.
The Badgers return to action November 13th at 7:30 pm when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues at Varsity Arena. Their next home contest is November 14th at 4:15 pm when they host the defending OUA Champion Western Mustangs at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

Warriors fall to Gaels in tightly contested match
The Waterloo women's hockey team almost pulled off what no other OUA team has been able to this year; almost but not quite. Waterloo stuck with the undefeated Queen's Gaels through 60 minutes of hard-nosed hockey but fell by a tight score of 2-1.
Queen's remains undefeated on the season at 6-0-1 while Waterloo went back to .500 on the season with a 3-3-1 record which was them in sixth overall in the OUA standings.
It was the Warriors who opened the scoring with Rebecca Rutherford (Ajax) batting home a rebound at 9:27 of the opening frame. Marissa Redmond (Ajax) and Amy Barnard (Cambridge) collected the helpers.
Queen's would take over in middle frame as Megan Farrell found the game's tying goal with a point blank chance she made no mistake on. Addi Halladay then put her Gaels up 2-1 on a goal at 15:23 of the second.
That would was all the scoring Queen's would need as Caitlyn Lahonen shut the door the rest of the way for the visiitng side. She made 27 stops for the victory while Stephanie Sluys (Clinton) was solid between the pipes for Waterloo allowing just two on 30 shots.
Michelle Tanel (Toronto) had the best chances to equalize the game with two late howitzers in the final minutes but they did not get by Lahonen.
Waterloo will be back in action tomorrow against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Puck drop is set for 2:30pm and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.

Voyageurs shut out by Mustangs
On Saturday afternoon, the Laurentian women's hockey team were host to the Western Mustangs. Despite out shooting the Mustangs 29-23, the Voyageurs were shutout 4-0 and have now lost their last 5 games.
Tia Kipfer opened the scoring at 6:14 of the first period with a shot from the left wing that found its way by Laurentian goalie Laura Deller.
The score remained tied until 16:41 of the second period when Kipfer again, on a great individual effort, found herself all alone on a breakaway and made a great move on Deller, to put the Mustangs up 2-0.
Western increased their lead to 3-0 when Stacey Scott redirected a pass from Lyndsay Kirkham at 5:32 of the third period. The Voyageurs boldly pulled their goalie with 9 minutes remaining in the third period in an attempts to start a comeback. Kipfer however, as she had all afternoon, sealed the Voyageurs fate scoring her third goal of the game on the empty net with 3:11 remaining. Katie Jacobs earned the shut-out in net for Western.
Laurentian head coach Stacey Colarossi remains positive, however, and believes the girls are still playing good hockey, "We are getting shots and giving ourself opportunities, we just need to score some goals. We outplayed them for seven straight minutes in the third period with our goalie pulled, we just couldn't score. Once we start capitalizing on our chances, we will have a better result. "
The Voyageurs are now 3-5-0 on the season and are back in action on Sunday, November 1st at Countryside arena. The girls look to get back into the win column against Windsor when the puck drops at 1:50pm.
