KINGSTON, Ont. (January 23, 2015) - The No.4 women's hockey team was defeated 3-1 by the No.7 Guelph Gryphons in a CIS top 10 showdown on Friday night at the Memorial Centre.
Both squads came out of the gates flying as they each looked to move up in the division standings. The Gryphons struck first in the opening frame on a goal from Sophie Contant.
Guelph quickly doubled their lead to start the second period after Jessica Pinkerton found the back of the net. The Gaels immediately responded just over twenty seconds later as Danielle Girard (Sarnia, Ont.) buried her second of the season after her point shot found the twine through a screen. Amber Sealey (Elora, Ont.) collected the lone assist on Girard's powerplay tally.
Queen's battled hard in the final period and generated numerous scoring opportunities but could not find the equalizer. The Gaels best chances of the third frame came on the powerplay in the final minutes but they could not solve Guelph goaltender Stephanie Nehring. The Gryphons added an empty netter as they went on to earn the 3-1 victory.
Final shots for the night totalled 28 to 25 in favour of Guelph. Goaltender Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels and was charged with the 25 save loss while Nehring earned the 24 save victory.
The No.4 Gaels (12-4-2) return to action Saturday night when they take on the Brock Badgers (1-12-3). Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre.
