W-Hockey Roundup: UOIT improves to 4-0 with win over Western
October 13
UOIT 3 at Western 1
LONDON, Ont. – It was a battle of undefeated teams on Sunday evening at Thompson Arena as the Western women's hockey team went head to head with the UOIT Ridgebacks. Heading into Sunday's game, both teams were 3-0-0 in the OUA standings however it was the Ridgebacks who took the top spot in the end, defeating the Mustangs 3-1.
The Ridgebacks outperformed the Mustangs in the first period, scoring twice on 15 shots. Jackie Gibson picked up the first goal on a rebound off Mustangs goalie Kelly Campbell. The Mustangs were able to get several shots in on Ridgeback netminder Tori Campbell in the next few minutes, but turnovers resulted in the play ending up back down in the Mustangs zone and Mikaeli Cavell put the score at 2-0 in favour of UOIT.
"I thought we took them [UOIT] for granted in the first period, and they outworked us and got a couple goals," said Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins. "But after the first period I thought we were the better team. I thought we took it to them. They played good defence, but we weren't taking those light penalties I think we would have tied it up.
A four-minute spearing penalty for Ridgeback Nicole LoPresti was called late in the first frame and carried over into the second where the Mustangs played much better offensively. Still, their only problem was solving Ridgeback keeper Campbell who provided solid goaltending, especially when faced with a penalty shot. Mustang Jessica Sorensen, who was tripped on a breakaway, shot low on the penalty shot, but once again Campbell made the save. After 40 minutes, the score remained at 2-0 for UOIT.
Western did not give up however, and seemed to have a renewed energy in the third period. Their persistence paid off halfway through as Brianna Iazzolino put Western on the board. Now only trailing 2-1, the home team called Campbell in from the crease for the extra attacker late. A turnover in the neutral zone after the next face-off resulted in a breakaway for UOIT's Gibson. She easily scored the empty netter with eight seconds left, despite a great last-minute attempt from Katelyn Gosling to block the goal, and the Ridgebacks took the game 3-1.
"When we were down 2-0, we never quit. We battled, we battled, we battled and we just didn't get a break," said Higgins.
The Mustangs Kelly Campbell had a great night in net, turning aside 29 shots, while Ridgeback Tori Campbell stopped 18.
Next up for Western is a matchup against the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday, Oct.18 at Thompson Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. and fans from around the world can watch all of the action live on Mustangs TV.

Sunday's game began slowly, with neither team finding the back of the net in the first period and the two squads combining for only 15 shots on goal. But that changed early in the second when Polci and ErinnNoseworthy scored a pair of power play goals in the first five minutes to take a 2-0 lead.

Laurier 3 at Waterloo 0
The Laurier Golden Hawks came into the CIF arena and blanked the Waterloo Warriors 3-0 on Saturday afternoon to improve to 2-1-0 on the season. With the loss the Warriors dropped to 1-1-1.
Amanda Smith was solid between the pipes for the visiting Hawks turning aside all 20 shots faced while Waterloo goalie Rebecca Bouwhuis (Orillia) was the busier of the two allowing three goals on 32 shots.
The opening frame saw both teams exchange chances with the best coming off the stick of Carolyn Burke (Mississauga) looking for her third goal of the young season. Rachel Marriott (Waterloo) fed a nice pass over to Burke on a 2-on-1 but she fired the puck just wide on the short side.
Laurier turned up the pressure in the second frame and would find the game's opening marker as Heather Platt would bang home a rebound at 6:21 for her first of the season.
The Hawks extended their lead seven minutes later as Devon Skeats wired a shot from the slot that went over the glove hand of Bouwhuis putting Laurier up 2-0.
The Warriors would tilt the ice back in their favour with several quality chances on back-to-back powerplay's but the quick glove of Smith would stymie the Warriors on several occasions keeping it at two-goal advantage for her team into the second intermission.
Waterloo found their opportunity to cut into Laurier's lead early in the third period as Haley Baxter took a body checking penalty for the Hawks but Waterloo could not solve Smith on the powerplay. From there the Hawks defence would prevent any further quality chances and add one more goal off the stick of Jessica Prevette to secure the 3-0 victory.
The Warriors will enjoy the rest of Thanksgiving weekend off before playing their first road game of the season next Friday in Oshawa against the UOIT Ridgebacks. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.

Ryerson 0 at Guelph 2
Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams with a final score of 2-0 at the Gryphon Centre on Saturday. The Gryphons record no moves to 2-1-0 on the season.
The Gryphons started out the first period aggressively against the Rams, successfully keeping the puck out of their own end and spending more time in Ryerson territory. Guelph started fighting for goals quickly, with a total of 7 shots on goal only ten minutes into the game. Ryerson amped up the intensity in the second half of the first period, but had trouble keeping possession of the puck, and Guelph took full advantage of their mistakes taking every opportunity to take a shot on goal. There were plenty of close calls for the Gryphons, but the score remained 0-0 at the end of the first period.
Guelph started the second period on a power play after a Ryerson player Victoria Arci (Woodbridge, Ont.) was called for hooking at the end of the first period. The Gryphons had a couple close calls, and gained a two-man advantage when Ram's player Lauren Lovold (MacTier, Ont.) was called for hooking in the first minute of the period. Jessica Pinkerton and Amanda Parkins were aggressive in the power play, with a couple of close calls on goal. Pinkerton had a close call on a rebound but was unable to beat the goalie. It would be Christine Grant that would finally beat the goaltender, after an assist from Pinkerton and Parkins, shooting the puck through the five-hole making it 1-0 for Guelph in the second period.
Guelph continued to play aggressively, keeping Ryerson from getting any shots on goal until the middle of the period when the Rams picked up the intensity, getting to the net four times in two minutes. Ryerson got their first power play of the game after Guelph was called for having too many players on the ice. Guelph successfully killed the penalty and shortly after Christine Grant scored her second goal of the game, tipping the puck in after a pass from Michelle Sabourin and Jessica Pinkerton, making it 2-0 at 17:24. Ryerson managed to pick up the intensity again bringing it back down the ice getting rebound after rebound, but Gryphon goalie Stephanie Nehring was able to keep Ryerson scoreless at the end of the second period.
The third period started with the Gryphons taking control of the puck again, taking advantage of the mistakes that the Rams were making down in their territory. Amanda Parkins had a few close calls in the third period, adding to the onslaught of shots on goal. Christine Grant and Katie Mora also added to the shots on goal count, but were unable to beat the Ryerson goalie.
In an attempt to overcome the Gryphons, the Rams pulled their goalie with 1:30 remaining in the game. The Rams were not able to beat the Gryphon defense and the final score was 2-0. The Gryphons outshot the Rams with a total of 31-18.
The Gryphon women's hockey team hit the ice again Saturday, Oct. 19 at 2:00 p.m. against the Queen's Gaels in Kingston.

York 3 at Western 4
LONDON, Ont. – Two goals from Jessica Sorensen helped lead the Western Mustangs women's hockey team to a 4-3 victory over the York Lions in a thrilling, penalty-filled affair on Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Arena.
"At 5-on-5, we were the better team," said Mustangs head coach Chris Higgins. "We controlled the play. We had some penalty trouble in the first and second periods and they [York] got us back on our heels. They played a very good team. Their goalie played extremely well in the first period when we dominated. I'm happy we came up with the win."
With the win in Saturday's home opener, the CIS No. 8 Mustangs maintain their undefeated regular season record, sitting at 3-0 and tying them for first place in the OUA with the Guelph Gryphons.
Western handily controlled the first period, consistently peppering York goalie Megan Lee with shots, but just could not find the back of the net. After fifteen tense minutes, and with both teams finally at full strength, the York Lions were first to get on the board, as Dana Somerville beat Western's starting netminder Olivia Ross. York led 1-0 after twenty minutes, despite Western's 18-8 shots-on-goal advantage.
The Lions came close to earning their second goal of the game early on in the second, however the Mustangs took possession of the puck and Katelyn Gosling tied the game at 1-1 with an unassisted goal. Just under three minutes later a scramble in from of York's net resulted in Western taking a 2-1 lead on a goal from Marlowe Pecora.
Shortly after Pecora's goal a slashing call on Western's Michelle Saunders turned the tables on the Mustangs, as Andrea Joyce netted the first of York's two goals in the period, scoring on the power play at 7:38. Three minutes later, York forward Amy Locke put her team up 3-2 on a shot from the blue line.
Down 3-2, Western switched goaltenders and Kelly Campbell took over goalkeeping duties for the rest of the game. The change proved successful for the Mustangs as the Lions could not find the answer to get past Campbell. Late in the period, Sorensen put the pressure back on York and tied the game 3-3 on her first goal in a Western uniform. York returned the pressure and the teams battled to the end of the period, sending the game to the intermission tied at three.
The Mustangs found the motivation they needed to take the win when Sorensen put up her second goal of the night – and what would be the game-winner -- at 6:29 of the third. Critical blocks from Saunders and solid defence allowed the Mustangs to maintain their lead, even as the Lions pulled Lee for the extra skater with 1:18 remaining.
Final shots on net were 31-27 in favour of the Mustangs.
"This team never quits," said Higgins after the game. "It's been a characteristic of them for the last year. It doesn't matter if we're up or down, we still play the same. It gives me a lot of confidence in them."
And heading into the Sunday's match against UOIT, Higgins knows the Ridgebacks will provide a stiff test.
"It's going to be real tough," said Higgins. "They're undefeated. They have a strong, strong team, but you know what these girls will do, they'll raise the bar to that level, so we'll be fine."
The Western women's hockey team caps off their Thanksgiving weekend with a 4:00 p.m. puck drop on Sunday, Oct. 13 at Thompson Arena against Oshawa's UOIT Ridgebacks. Fans from around the world can watch all of the action live on Mustangs TV.
