LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs couldn't have asked for a better result from the OUA Tennis Championship, coming away with both the men's and women's banners on Sunday at the University Tennis Centre.
The women's title is Western's first since 2012, and the 10th overall in program history. The win on the men's side is Western's fourth in the past five years, and 19th overall. It's also the fifth time that the Mustangs have won both the men's and women's championships in the same year, most recently accomplishing the feat in 2012.
The final matchup of the day proved to be the most exciting, with the host Mustangs squaring off with the top seeded York Lions for the women's title. York jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the contest, however Western stormed back to take the final four matches of the night to claim the title. Overall, the Lions won two of the three doubles matchups, while Western won four of the six singles matches to secure the 4-3 victory.
In the men's gold medal match, the Mustangs cruised to a 6-1 win over the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues. Western swept all three doubles matches on Sunday, before moving on to take five of six in singles action. The win avenged the Mustangs loss to Toronto in last year's finals, and added another chapter to the storied rivalry between the two schools on the tennis court.
Earlier in the day the Montreal Carabins finished off their weekend by claiming the bronze medals on both the men's and women's sides.
Montreal took on York to start the day, defeating the Lions 6-2 to take the bronze. The Carabins won two of three doubles matches, and followed that up by going four-for-six in singles to secure the win.
Just as it was in the gold medal final, the women's bronze medal matchup proved to be a tightly contested affair, with the Carabins coming out on top with a 4-3 win. Waterloo picked up the first point of the match by taking two out of three in doubles action, however Montreal won four of the six singles contests to claim the overall victory.
