BLUES DO IT AGAIN AT OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS
The first final to start the evening was the Women's 200 m Butterfly where Brittney Scott (U of T) finished with a time of 2:17.33 earning a gold medal. Fellow U of T team-mate Orlagh O'Kelly finished with a silver at 2:18.91 and Kristy MacLennan (Laurier) picked up the bronze with a time of 2:20.98.
The next event was the Men's 200 m Butterfly and the gold went to U of T swimmer Ian MacLeod with a time of 2:01.74. The silver and bronze went to a pair of first year Guelph swimmers Scott Van Doormaal (2:03.43) and Jonathon Pilon (2:05.69).
First year swimmer from U of T, Sasha Theron swam a fast run in the Women's 100 m Freestyle finishing with a time of 56.18, earning the gold. Jen Porenta (U of T) finished with a silver in 57.54 and Kristen Cloutier (Guelph) with a time of 59.18 earned herself a bronze.
In the Men's 100 m Freestyle, Brad Vanderkam (Western) came within 0.04 seconds of breaking the OUA record as he finished with a time of 50.52 earning himself the gold. Rob Taylor (Western) followed with a time 50.68 earning himself a silver and Martyn Forde (U of T) finished with a bronze with a time of 51.51.
Next up was the Women's 50 m Breaststroke where Katy Perry from Queen's University earned herself a gold medal, posting a time of 33.63. Amanda Budd (Guelph) finished in second with a time of 34.09 and Brittany Segeren (Queens) earned a bronze with a time of 34.16.
Kurtis Miller from University of Western earned a gold medal in the 50 m Breaststroke with his time of 29.04. First-year U of T swimmer Johnathon Caguiat (U of T) earned silver with 29.71 and Mark Mitchell posted a time of 30.14 to take the bronze.
In the Women's 200 m Backstroke, U of T swimmer Gillian Bryon won gold with a time of 2:17.37, while Alyssa Hubert (Guelph) finished in second in 2:18.14 and Orlagh O'Kelly finished with 2:21.00 claiming the bronze.
On the Men's side of the 200 m Backstroke, two first-year swimmers Scott Van Doormaal (Guelph) and Hans Fracke (Ottawa), claimed the top two spots with respective times of 2:02.44 and 2:04.02. Ryan Atkinson (Western) earned bronze with his time of 2:05.79.
The Women's 800 m Freestyle saw first-year Guelph swimmer Laura Kendall post a time 8:59.09 to earn herself a gold medal. Carly Cermak (McMaster) took the silver with a time of 9:03.08 and Kate Plyley (U of T) took the bronze with a time of 9:04.50.
The Men's 1500 m Freestyle saw two first year swimmers claim the top two spots as David Hughes (Laurier) and Buddy Green (Laurentian) finished with respective times of 16:14.22 and 16:22.65. Mike Penney from Carlton finished in third with a final time of 16:24.09.
In the Women's 200 m Medley Relay, a new OUA record was made as the U of T team of Julia Drozdowski, Lindsay Rife, Orlagh O'Kelly and Sasha Theron beat the previous record of 2:01.43 with their new time of 1:59.22. Second place went to the team from Guelph who came in 2:01.38 and third went to McMaster who finished in 2:01.99.
Another OUA record was broken in the Men's 200 m Medley Relay by the team of Rob Taylor, Kurtis Miller, Brad Vanderkam and Rob Caratun from Western, who beat the record of 1:43.39 with their new time of 1:42.64. Second place went to the U of T, which posted a time of 1:44.25 and third went to Waterloo with a final time of 1:48.24.
The Women's 400 m Freestyle Relay saw a close finish as McMaster took gold with their time of 3:55.60 over the second place Toronto team who came in at 3:55.62. University of Guelph came in third with their time of 3:57.80.
The last event of the evening saw Western take gold in the Men's 400 m Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:26.28. U of T claimed second with their time of 3:31.17 and McMaster finished third with their time of 3:34.58.
Overall there was a good turnout for the OUA Championships. Friends and family from all over Ontario gathered in the Laurentian Gold Pool to cheer on the competitors. The LU Pool averaged approximately 100 fans per session this weekend.
