UOIT HITS WATER FOR 2008 ROWING SEASON
LONDON, Ont. – UOIT was on the water for the beginning of the 2008 varsity rowing season as the blue crew headed to London to take part in the Western Invitational Regatta on Sunday.
Head coach Rob Millikin was pleased with the effort of his young team over the course of the day, even though his crew ran into some tough luck.
The Women's Lightweight Four, with two novices in the boat tried valiantly over the 4K, finishing well down in the standings. The crew had an excellent spring going when disaster struck as one of the rowers came off her seat. The team would finish second in their heat.
The Women's Open Eight finished in the middle pack over the 4K race and then went on to win their heat in the Open Women's Heat, closely followed by the UOIT Novice Women's Eight. Although it was good showing for the team, it was not enough points to overcome the results of the Head race portion of the competition.
The men's Varsity Heavy Eight team had difficulty in coordination over the 4K course despite an excellent start in the spring, as they were leading the field. Late in the race, the crew ran into some problems that almost stopped the boat allowing others to spring ahead.
The Men's Novice Eight finished third in their sprint and fourth in the 4K race while the Women's Novice Eight finished in the middle of the pack and were second to our Varsity in the 400m sprint.

The team will get back into training right away with the Head of the Welland set to take place on Sunday, September 28.
