Williams and Kirkham double down on golden efforts as Ravens continue to shine
North Bay, Ont. – Day 2 of the 2019 OUA Nordic Ski Championship saw the competitors hit the trails for the 7.5km Free Individual Start.
Coming off medals on Day 1, the Carleton Ravens had another big effort, claiming a total of three medals across the women's and men's races. The Lakehead Thunderwolves added two more, while the Nipissing Lakers picked up a single once again.
On the women’s side, Zoë Williams made it back-to-back gold medals for the Ravens as she once again finished ahead of Lakehead’s Alannah Maclean. Williams’ 23:51.6 was 1:01 faster than Maclean’s run on Sunday. Shaylynn Loewen rounded out the top three on the women’s side, finishing with a bronze medal.
Carleton took home the next five spots in the standings to close out the middle day of the competition.
For the men, Aidan Kirkham made it two-for-two, coming away with a second gold medal finishing the course in just over 20 minutes. Ezra Pierce put together a strong race, finishing 46 seconds back and earning a silver medal and rounding out the podium was Lakers top skier, Jordan Cascagnette, who now has a silver and bronze to his name. He finished 55.3 seconds back of the gold medal spot.
Lakehead had five skiers, along with one from Ottawa, to round out the top 10 on the men’s side for Sunday’s race.
Through two days of racing and some great conditions, Carleton has total six meals – four gold, one silver and one bronze. Lakehead has earned four medals – two silver and two bronze – and Nipissing has a pair (one silver, one bronze).
Next up, to close out the event Monday, is the Team Relay.
Races begin at 10am on the women’s side and 11am for the men.
