OUA Nordic Skiing Championship: Host Thunderwolves hold lead after day one
THUNDER BAY, Ont. - On a beautiful day at Lappe Nordic Ski Centre, skiers and spectators alike enjoyed ideal conditions for day one of the OUA Skiing Championships.
Both the Lakehead women and men's teams are in the lead for the team championship banners after day one. The men hold a commanding 18-point lead over the Carleton Ravens, while the women's team hold a 9-point advantage over the their Carleton counterparts. Full team standings follow below.
The first event was the women's 5km freestyle, which Lakehead's Andrea Lee captured with ease, finishing in a time of 16:58.6, 28s ahead of the next fastest skier, fellow Thunderwolf Alannah Maclean. Carleton Raven Kendra Murray finished third, 35s behind Lee. Guelph's Mary Thompson placed 4th, 50s off Lee's torrid pace. Top 10 finishers are listed below.

The men's 10 km freestyle was won by Carleton's Ben Wilkinson-Zan in a time of 29:48.2, edging out Lakehead's Scott Hill by 1 second. Thankfully for Lakehead they claimed the 2-through-5 finishes in the event, thus gaining more points towards the team's total. Victor Hopper, Ben Jones and Nick Monette placed 3,4 and 5, while Leeland Hawkings placed 6th for the Ravens. Top 10 finishers listed below.
The 3X3.75km relays in the afternoon made for quite the crowd pleasing entertainment, as more spectators rung cow bells and cheered on their teams.
The women's relay looked like it was going to be won by the Carleton team after the first two legs, Carleton holding a 3 second lead as Raven Anna Crawford and T-Wolf Daphne Haggarty made their switches in the exchange zone to respective anchors Kendra Murray and Andrea Lee. Lee would prove why she is an international contender, taking the lead in the final loop and winning by almost 16 seconds over Murray. Full relay results listed below.
The men's 3X3.75km relay was all Lakehead, as both the Lakehead A team and B team would create a lot of space between themselves and their nearest opponent, the Carleton A team in the early going. It would come down to a photo finish between the two Lakehead teams, with Harry Seaton (team B) extending his right leg just enough to nip Nick Monette (team A) by half a second. Carleton team A would make up ground, thanks to Ben Wilkinson-Zan's leg of the race (the fastest of anyone on the day), finishing in third place, almost 40 seconds behind Lakehead team A. Full relay results listed below
Day two will get underway tomorrow beginning at 10am with the Women's Classic 10km mass start race, followed by the Men's Classic 15 km mass start race at 11am.
