M-VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP: Western heads into the break with a win
Once again the duo of Justin Scapinello and Garrett May paced the Mustangs offence. Scapinello led all players with 22.5 points on 20 kills and two aces, while May was just behind with 21 points on 20 kills and one ace. Kyle Williamson led the way for Windsor, earning 15.5 points with 14 kills and one ace.
The Mustangs started out strong in the first set, jumping out to a 11-4 lead and never looking back, making short work of the Lancers to pick up a 25-12 victory in the opening frame.
Things would tighten up in the second set with the two teams trading points right up until the Mustangs went on a 5-1 run to put some separation between themselves and the Lancers with a 16-11 score. Windsor was unable to overcome the five-point deficit, eventually dropping the set to Western 25-20.
Up 2-0 Western entered the third set ready to close out the game, however Windsor had other ideas. The Lancers started out down 5-0 and eventually fell behind 11-6 but the team fought back and overcame the Mustangs to take the set 25-23.
Buoyed by their third set win Windsor kept things rolling in the fourth, in what would turn out to be the game’s tightest set, with the score tied on 12 occasions and seeing four different lead changes. Windsor opened up a 13-10 lead before falling behind 23-22, however the Lancers would then go on a 3-0 run to end the set with another 25-23 win.
With the momentum on the Lancers side Western faced a tough challenge in the final frame and both teams would trade points up until the midway point, with Western holding a slight 8-6 edge at the break. The Mustangs wouldn’t relinquish that lead, eventually leaving the court with a 15-12 win to take the match by a 3-2 score.
The win was Western’s seventh on the year, giving the team a 7-2 record and sole possession of third place, four points behind league-leading McMaster, in the OUA. Windsor sits at 2-7, tied for seventh with Guelph and Toronto.
Western now heads into the winter break with their next game action not coming until the York Invitational tournament from December 27-29. Their next regular season contest is a return match with Windsor on January 11 at Alumni Hall.
