LAKEHEAD WINS SHOOTOUT OVER WESTERN, WATERLOO EARNS TIGHT WIN OVER WINDSOR
The University of Windsor (0-7-0) dropped a close result to the University of Waterloo (6-3) on Friday night 6-5 in Waterloo. The Lancers are still winless on the season after seven games while the Warriors improve their winning record to 6-3.
The game was a hard fought affair and after Windsor went down by two goals in the first, they climbed back to challenge the home side in an exciting game.
Waterloo's Jordan Brenner (Waterloo, Ont.) and Chris Ray (Kelowna, BC) netted the first two goals of the game, giving the Warriors a 2-0 first period lead. The second period was all Windsor as they responded with three unanswered goals from Alex White (Tecumseh, Ont.), Kyle Nishizaki (Chatham, Ont.) and Steve Walter (Kingsville, Ont.).
The third period gave way to six goals, the opening one from Lancer's White for his second of the night. With the game at 4-2 for Windsor, Waterloo responded with four unanswered goals, two from Kevin Hurley (Kitchener, Ont.) followed by a Doug Spooner (Scarborough, Ont.) goal and one from David Edgeworth (Kingston, Ont.). Lancer Jon Romic (Toronto, Ont.) pulled a late one back in the last minute of play but it was not enough to catch Waterloo.
Windsor goaltender Jim Watt (Edmonton, AB) made 31 saves on the night. Cody Spicer (Ottawa, Ont.) and Jimmy Bernier (Baie-Comeau, Que.) split the games recording 28 saves total for the victory.
Lakehead 4, Western 3 - OT
The University of Western Ontario (5-2-0-2) succumbed to a 4-3 shootout result at the hands of Lakehead University (6-2) in Saturday's hockey action in Thunder Bay. The win was the second consecutive shootout victory over the visiting number seven Mustangs this season as the Thunderwolves move into first place in the division.
Western rookie goaltender Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, BC) made a number of key saves throughout the game and teammate Ryan Hare (Sarnia, Ont.) was solid for Western recording a goal and two assists on the night. Thunderwolves captain Andrew Brown scored two goals while netminder Chris Whitely earns hi second consecutive shootout win, outstanding in goal for Lakehead.
Lakehead went up by a goal in the first from Brown before conceding two in the second to Western. The Thunderwolves pulled one back to even it up at two heading into the third.
