KATZ BEATS BUZZER AS MAC PULLS OFF DRAMATIC WIN
Laurentian was involved in another nail biter Friday as they got past the Lakehead Thunderwolves 55-54 with a last-second three-point play by Ben Palmer at the Ben Avery Gym. The Voyageurs trailed by two but Palmer scored two of his game-high 17 in the final seconds and after being fouled, added a free-throw to complete the late rally. Palmer also had 10 boards, while Matt Brown chipped in 12 points. Despite getting 30 points from Kiraan Posey, the Thunderwolves also lost their first game of the weekend Friday, 83-67 to York. Eves led the way for York again, hitting eight of his 17 three-point attempts for a team-high 28 points. Tut Ruach had seven assists for the Lions.
The Carleton Ravens went to 4-0 after defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 78-74 Friday and the Waterloo Warriors 82-60 the following night. Guard Osvaldo Jeanty led the Ravens with 19 points in the Laurier game, while also adding five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Aaron Doorenkamp chipped in 17 points and seven rebounds for the three-time defending CIS champs, while Brandon Gorman paced the Hawks with 23 points (6-for-10 from the three-point range). The Ravens had a much easier time against Waterloo, leading by double-digits throughout most of the game. Jeanty had another 19 points, while Doorenkamp scored 17 with eight rebounds. Carleton, which extended its CIS record winning streak to 82 consecutive wins, out-rebounded the Warriors 43-21.
Brad Rootes had game-highs of 24 points and nine assists to lead the Brock Badgers to a 75-65 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues Friday. Rootes hit eight of his 16 shots from the field, including 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Dwayne Grant scored 21 for Toronto. Brock also defeated the Ryerson Rams 72-68 Saturday. Kevin Steinstra dominated for the Badgers, recording 25 points and 14 rebounds, 13 of which came on the defensive glass. The win improves Brock to 4-1 on the season, second in the West behind the 4-0 Guelph Gryphons. Guelph won both of its games against the same two opponents, 70-62 over Ryerson Friday and a close 44-41 victory over Toronto Saturday. J.R. Bailey led the Gryphons in both games, scoring 22 points with nine rebounds against the Rams and adding 10 more, with another nine boards, against the Blues.
In other action Friday, The Windsor Lancers defeated the RMC Paladins 82-39, the Queen’s Golden Gaels beat the Western Mustangs 74-70 and the Ottawa Gee-Gees won 76-68 over Waterloo. On Saturday, Western beat RMC 74-52, Windsor upended Queen’s 65-54 and Ottawa beat Laurier 78-64.
