Gryphons lead after day one at OUA figure skating championship
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons are in first place with a five point lead at the end of day one at the 2014 OUA Figure Skating Championships hosted at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on the campus of Ryerson University.
The leading Gryphons picked up two first place finishes on day one including Kelsey Sobkowich and Leeann Duncan in the Senior Similar Pairs event and Amanda Sproule and Chelsea Mulvale in the Intermediate Similar Pairs Free Skate. Guelph finished in the top three in six of the seven events.
The Western Mustangs also struck gold twice on day one and sit in second place overall. Carly Smith and Lauren Malott won the Senior Silver Similar Dance Pairs event and Aysha Thomas and Clarissa Luo followed that up with a win in the Junior Silver Similar Dance Pairs.
The host Ryerson Rams sit in bronze medal position heading into day two and won four medals on Thursday. Katherine Bilinsky and Lisa Makeeva took silver in the Senior Similar Pairs event, Barbara Basar and Lauren Hildebrand won bronze in the Junior Silver Similar Dance Pairs, Alysha Gjos and Julia Withers took silver in the Intermediate Similar Pairs Free Skate and Christina Pulla won the silver in the Short Program.
Other gold medal winners on day one were the Queen’s foursome in the Bronze Rhythm Dance, Carleton’s Jazz Smyl Joy and Waterloo’s Lillian Rieck shared gold in the Open Individual Dance and Brock’s Alyxandra Martin was atop the field in the Short Program.
The OUA Figure Skating Championships resume on Friday at 9:00 a.m. with the Gold Singles skate. The championships will continue to be webcast live here.
