Banner Season: Toronto takes home sixth straight men's fencing title to close out season
St. Catharines, Ont. (via Brock Badgers) - The Toronto Varsity Blues secured their sixth consecutive provincial banner as the 2022 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Men's Fencing Championships wrapped up at Brock University's Ian D. Beddis Gymnasium on Sunday, April 3.
The Varsity Blues hoisted the Charles Walter Trophy, for the 36th time in program history, after finishing with 364 points, ahead of the Western Mustangs (197) and bronze medalist McMaster Marauders (167).
Toronto's Colin McCurdy was awarded the George Tully Trophy, presented to the male fencer most proficient in skill, style and sportsmanship as judged by a panel of judges, Brock head coach Tim Stang earned the OUA Coach of the Year award.
TEAM RELAYS: The home side Badgers captured gold in the foil team relay final as Malcolm McLeod, Tanguy Rial, Josiah Robertson and Conor Yule vanquished Toronto's team of Teophile Lemay, David Chen-Li, Alex Lum-Debono and Ben Xu. The Ryerson Rams team of Omer Ghazali, Ethan Haines and Miguel Lanceta defeated the Waterloo Warriors to win bronze.
In the sabre team relay, the Varsity Blues united to win gold as Seongmin Chang, Cameron Haigh, Seth Logan and Boris Ng outlasted the Queen's Gaels team of Luke Steverango, Alex Sun, Kenneth West and Filbert Yung. For sabre team bronze, Carleton's Kuzey Gunesli, Daniel Manyoki, Jacob Tynski and Burke Willson defeated the Rams.
The tournament concluded with the epee team relay. Toronto won its third medal of the day when the squad of Colin Dale, Valdis Ling, Colin McCurdy and Johnathan Zimmerman took down Western's trio of Matei Dan-Dobre, John Huang and Rick Wu. McMaster's Oscar Hand, Kenan Liu, Brendan McAllister and Joshua Mota won the bronze over RMC.
INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION: No. 6 seed Ethan Haines of Ryerson narrowly defeated No. 8 Steven Zhang of Western by a score of 15-14 to capture the Charles Walters Trophy as individual foil champion in the final. The third-place match featured a pair of Brock Badgers duelling it out for bronze as Tanguy Rial got by Malcolm McLeod 15-10.
In the individual men's sabre final, top-ranked Queen's sabre Alex Sun dispatched Jacob Saunders of McMaster 15-13 to win the Schwende Trophy. Toronto's Boris Ng claimed bronze by defeating Varsity Blues teammate Cameron Haigh 15-11.
Colin McCurdy of Toronto won the Desjarlais Trophy in the individual epee final. McCurdy, the second seed, took down No. 5 John Huang of Western 15-11. In the bronze-medal match, Johnathan Zimmerman of Toronto struck down Colin Dale, also of Toronto, 15-8.
