HAMILTON, Ont. – With three touchdown passes in today's game versus the Western Mustangs, Windsor Lancers quarterback Austin Kennedy tied former Ottawa Gee-Gee Josh Sacobie's career touchdown passes record of 79.
With 7:48 to go in the 1st quarter, Gilbert Stewart hauled in the five-yard pass from Kennedy to give the Lancers an early 7-0 lead. Later in the same quarter, Kennedy would connected with Evan Pszczonak from eight yards out for his second touchdown of the day, extending the Lancers lead to 14-0.
With this touchdown, Kennedy surpassed former Queen's Gael quarterback Danny Brannagan for second on the list with 78 career touchdown passes.
In the fourth quarter, with Windsor trailing 29-14 Kennedy would once again find Pszczonak, this time on a 38 yd pass to narrow the score and tie the record of 79.
On the season, Kennedy has thrown for 2252 yards with 15 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, leading Windsor to a 5-3 record.
Kennedy burst on the scene for the Lancers in 2010, throwing for over 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns in seven games in his rookie season. He set a career high in touchdown passes the following season with 20, and followed it with seasons of 18 and 17, and has thrown for over 10,000 yards in his career.
Now in his final year with Windsor, Kennedy has been a model of consistency leading his team to the playoffs in each of the past four seasons. His goal for this year, though, was not about touchdown records, but rather to win his first ever playoff game. Born and raised in Windsor, Kennedy also set a goal to get at least one home playoff game on the field he grew up just minutes from.
Despite their loss to the Mustangs, Kennedy and the Lancers achieved this goal as they will host the Ottawa Gee-Gees next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the OUA quarter-finals.
Former St. Mary's Husky Chris Flynn holds the CIS record with 87 touchdown passes set between 1987-1990.
