BEHIE NAMED ASSISTANT HEAD COACH FOR MARAUDER FOOTBALL
The McMaster Department of Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce the appointment of Jon Behie to the position of Assistant Head Coach for varsity football, to go along with his duties as the Marauders’ Offensive Coordinator.
This new role will see Coach Behie assume additional responsibilities that are vital for a Marauder program that intends to remain a consistent championship contender, after winning McMaster’s first Vanier Cup in 2011.
McMaster Head Coach Stef Ptaszek, who recently agreed to a new long-term contract extension to continue on the Marauder sideline, knows a strong staff is a key part of team success, adding, "I am very pleased that Coach Behie will return next season to help us defend our national title. He is an integral part of the Marauder Football family; not only one of the best OCs in the country, he is an excellent role model for our student athletes."
A former two-sport star out of Burlington Nelson high school, Behie played five years as both a starting quarterback and slotback for the Marauders, as well as spending two seasons on the McMaster basketball team. He joined the football staff in 2007 as quarterbacks coach before assuming the Offensive Coordinator position.
"I bleed Maroon and care deeply for the football program at McMaster,” said Behie, who won two OUA football titles during his playing days. “My goal has always been to help the program succeed, no matter what my position or title, but this move shows that my work and loyalty have been recognized, and it means a great deal to me. I thank both Stef Ptaszek and Jeff Giles for the opportunity to be even more involved in our program.”
In his role as Offensive Coordinator, Behie helped direct a McMaster attack that was the most prolific in Canada in 2011, averaging over 530 yards of total offense per game. The Marauders also put up over 40 points on the scoreboard in each of the team’s four post-season victories, en route to the national championship.
